Okay, sorry...
This is a teaser of sorts, I guess.
Received the Nokia Lumia 930 yesterday. Had quite a long bit of play with it.

It is a stunning device. 'My' model is the black one. It's not glam, but it oozes quality and sturdiness and simple beauty. The build quality seems absolutely flawless.
I thought the Lumia 1520 was outstanding, but the 930 is unrivalled. The HTC M8 feels like something from a vending machine in comparison. iPhone 5S? Pah....

Speed: it's fast. Very fast. Nokia even got a grip on the camera lag. Still not as fast as the
iPhone 5c/s or some highend Androids, but it is no longer the "camera that misses the best shots". Picture quality is superb, too. Though, I do have to try it under all kinds of conditions before I pass judgement...

Did I mention how fast WP 8.1 Cyan is? On the Lumia 930? No? It's fast.
Efficient. I transferred 6,000 photos to the device and 500 songs. Just, you know, why not...
Disconnected the device, opened the photo app, and boom... you can immediately scroll through all photos without a stutter or a slowly forming thumbnail. The native gallery on 'my' One M8 struggled after 500+ photos filled the otherwise empty memory card... Our Galaxy Camera cannot handle 50 photos without struggling.

I think it even beats the iPad Air and iPhone 5s that I tried out earlier this year.

Battery seems adequate so far, and it IS a brandnew model, so things oughta go better once properly calibrated. Though GTA San Andreas is not officially compatible yet, I installed it and 45 minutes of CJ action hardly made a dent.

3rd party apps that struggle on the powerhouse 1520 just work smoothly and fast on the 930 - Twitter, Tweetium, Fantasia, Photoshop etc etc...

Good times. It's been a while since a phone impressed me on so many levels.
It's not flawless, mind you. The screen, though gorgeous, isn't compatible with Nokia's excellent Glance feature. Shame. But I read they are working on a solution to the issue.

More over the next few days.

More?

Used the Lumia 930 some more.

Music? Ah, yes... The 930 produces an excellent sound. I'd like to b*tch about the fact that the equalizer is not embedded in the Music
app, but in Settings instead, but the thing is - you may never need it. Live tracks, studio recordings, rock, hip hop, classics... all
sound excellent. AND LOUD! Oh, I'm talking via headphones. The built-in speaker is adequate. You can chat handsfree, or play GTA in bed without earphones but you won't entertain guests with it.

My BIG GRIPE, though: The default player is the XBox Music thing.
It's perfectly adequate, and has some nice features, but: even if you disable "Display Online Content" it still wants to connect to the cloud. Which leads to a delay when you just wanna listen to some music while not online.
Also: below we discuss the doubling up of camera apps in WP - The MS default Camera app, Nokia Camera, Pro Camera, Blink etc etc...

Same goes for music - you have the MS Music app & Nokia's Mix Radio.
A bit too Samsung if you ask me. But then, to be fair, it's not a unique Lumia problem. The HTC One M8 I tried, has Google's Play music app and HTC's Music Player. WORSE: songs I bought from Google Play and downloaded to the M8, do not show up in the HTC Music app's library. I had to manually copy the files to the right folder... Big YIKES!!!!!!!

Anyhoo...
After 4 days I still reckon battery life is pretty good. I use the 930 a LOT, and get easily through a 24 hour period - not just a work day. And that includes downloading apps, trying out features and settings, editing photos etc etc... Beats the One M8 by miles, and better not mention the iPhone 5S - a device I could drain in 4 hours flat.

I'm wondering, on WP 8.1 can you take higher resolution photos with the default camera app or is it stuck at 8MP or whatever it is?

JanSt / MOD  Aug. 3, 2014 at 18:52

The Lumia 930 takes 15MP and/or 5MP... Lumia 1520 took 16MP (I believe) and/or 5MP on WP 8... You were never 'stuck' with 8MP... Are you thinking of the upload limit? WP used to
have a limit of what you could upload to OneDrive etc...

But maybe I misunderstand?
Or do you mean viewing? In the past you could not really see the full-res image on the phone. Is that what you're referring to?

I feel for you :) I liked the 630 upon launch (and it's STILL awesome for its price!), but having used the 930.... hahaha. Oh, sorry *blush*

Yep, price in Ireland on prepay starts at €449 including the 'wireless' charger, and the wireless music thing MD12 - together worth over €150... not too shabby. Compare: HTC One M8 on prepay: €649...

Just took a few more piccies - murky, drizzly day, but some useable shots of one of my frantic cats... Shutter lag no longer ruining the joy.

I really need to try WP8.1, I'm hearing good things about it. I haven't been a fan of WP in the past, but the general consensus seems to be that 8.1 is a significant improvement. That said, I wouldn't be dropping £400-£500 on a Lumia 930 on which to play with 8.1 haha :p.

mightyforest  Aug. 4, 2014 at 07:58

i paid £350 for the wifes 930 from EE which came with the free £130 worth of wireless goodies. If you want something ceaper like ive done then grab a 625/630 and put 8.1 developers preview on

Its a lovely phone, but is still a non-starter for me. Within an hour of playing with it I discovered that the ebay website is borderline unusable. I didn't test much further.

Whether its microsoft or ebay at fault is essentially irrelevant. I want to know that my phone will work for all (major at the very least) websites.

mightyforest  Aug. 4, 2014 at 11:04

Whats the issue with using Ebay? ive never had any issues either with the website or the app

matt101101 / MOD  Aug. 4, 2014 at 11:54

Can you get Google Chrome on WP?

You can't easily swipe between images when there are multiple ones, it can take 4 or 5 goes to get it to work. But the biggest problem is the description page, I usually, but not always get a small unusable section of the page on the top inch or so of the screen, making it impossible to read descriptions. I've not tried the app.

I had the same issue with a 920.

I just tried the ebay site. No issues. Also: UC Browser and Surfy have no issues with the site.

No. But UC Web, Surfy and a couple of other competent browsers. IE11 is very good. And I had no issues trying the ebay site just now. 0_O

More importantly than Chrome, which I could probably live without once I was all set up on another browser, can you get the Google Music app on WP? If not, WP is useless to me, as I couldn't use my All Access subscription and I just don't get along with Spotify.

Nokia MixRadio ... afaik it's cheaper? Anyhoo, no: your Google subscription would be useless...

mightyforest  Aug. 4, 2014 at 15:21

i use nokia mix radio which is pretty good

Just tried picking a random item (first one in the suggestions on the home page)

item:
http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/141209012179?NAV=HOME

screenshot:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/nqk7dqjg7qrmo44/wp8.jpg

It would be great if its a simple config issue. Its a brand new phone, no apps installed, pretty much pristine (test phone at work and I was the first to try it).

JanSt / MOD  Aug. 4, 2014 at 17:49

The screenshot shows the mobile site of ebay, right?
In IE in settings you can force full desktop pages by default! That's the beauty of mobile IE... Well, for me, anyways. I thought you were talking about the proper
ebay page. ;) I haven't tried the mobile site.
The full site works just fine.

mightyforest  Aug. 4, 2014 at 20:23

settings / ease of access / allow zooming on all web content - turn on :)

That's an alternative, yes ;)

And hey, there is NO one browser that handles all websites.
Just ask the devs of this very site or Ahmad and matt :p

Oh... must check if I can put it on 'my' 1520...

Thanks, sorry, but I just meant the resolution of the photos. I have the 1020 and with the default camera app all photos are taken at 8MP, if you use the Nokia Pro Cam it does the dual shoot thing 8MP + 38MP, but I'm wondering if with 8.1 you can take photos of higher than 8MP with the default app. There's no option to take a higher res photo than 8MP with the default camera app even though the sensor is supposedly 41MP.

Sorry if I'm confusing anyway!

Ah, got it...

Just tried it on the 930 - the MS camera app shoots a 5MP image, and no high res version is created.
But: if the Pro Cam bothers you with all it's confusing trickery, why don't you install the simpler Nokia Camera? It's almost like the MS camera app, but DOES save the full res 38MP image, also...
For the Lumia 1520 and 930 the ProCam app isn't even available afaik... In fact, I think that app is on the way out. The 'normal' Nokia Camera app, now offers fast simplicity or, if you want, more complex settings.
