Jolla smartphone finally released, 450 units to start off

Wow, it was an incredible 16 months ago that Jolla, a Finnish startup comprised of ex Nokia employees, vowed to keep the MeeGo dream alive, and ultimately pick up where the Nokia N9 left off.

Well, they’ve kinda succeeded, in the sense that the Jolla smartphone might’ve impressed had it been released last year. Alas, it’s almost 2014, guys.

Jolla’s MeeGo-based ‘Sailfish’ to debut in hardware next month?

We first heard of Jolla back in July, a team of MeeGo-loving former Nokia employees keen to breathe new life into the operating system.

It’s only been a few months, but already we’re hearing that Jolla’s efforts might bear fruit as early as next month. Is that a banana in Jan’s pocket?

Cancelled Nokia N9 successor revealed

There’s nary a day goes by that our Jan doesn’t mourn the passing of MeeGo while cuddling his beloved N9.

To add salt to the wound, news has leaked of a handset intended to be the N9’s successor, complete with a QWERTY keyboard. Can someone keep an eye on Jan?

An interesting little company called Jolla has announced its presence via the cyberwebs. With staff including former Nokia directors, Jolla (Finnish for “dinghy”) looks to pick up where the Nokia N9 left off.

That’s right; all going well, Jolla will keep the dream alive, with new MeeGo-based hardware.

Flashing the Nokia N9

Flashing the Nokia N9

Damien Bailey  May. 14, 2012 at 18:30

After much nagging to one of my employers to have a play with the Nokia N9, they finally caved in and allowed me use of one for a time. The only catch was the phone was (in their terms) “bricked”. It was not quite true as there was obviously life still in the device as it would switch on, but it would then restart every 10 seconds in an endless loop, never getting past the Nokia logo.

On searching Google,  this seems to be a common problem with the Nokia N9. However, guides to fixing seemed few and incomplete with a huge majority aimed at Linux users. So I’ve decided to write a more broken down version for Windows users.

Developer teases Android Ice Cream Sandwich port for the Nokia N9

A lot of people maintain that if Nokia was determined to look to an outside platform when ditching MeeGo and Symbian a year ago, it made the wrong choice in Windows Phone and should have opted for Android itself.

Well, Nokia N9 users can now get a glimpse of what might have been thanks to NITDroid, a port for the MeeGo OS that brings the wonders of Android Ice Cream Sandwich to the Nokia flagship.

Nokia N9 gets hefty price cut, now cheaper than the Lumia 800

The Meego-powered Nokia N9 was never officially launched in the UK, but if you're willing to pay up front it can be had SIM-free from a good few online retailers.

And thanks to a hefty discount from Expansys you can now get in on the action for as little as £369, a full £60 cheaper than the equivalent Lumia 800 model.

White Christmas – part 2

White Christmas – part 2

Lewis Curdie  Nov. 30, 2011 at 13:00

My memory is starting to go a bit, but apparently, five days ago, I wrote a feature called White Christmas, wherein I looked at the increasing array of white smartphones. Who knew?

I highly recommend revisiting part 1, lest you find yourself completely and utterly lost. Jumping straight in here would be like trying to watch the Two Towers without having seen The Fellowship of the Ring. Seriously, part 1 had that many twists and turns. Ahem.

My Nokia Blog has been eavesdropping on a Twitter conversation between Damian and Hell (you heard me), with sexy results.

Apparently both the Nokia N9 and Lumia 800 will receive software updates for their cameras, courtesy of Nokia's Damian Dinning.

Screw you, UK

Screw you, UK

Lewis Curdie  Nov. 11, 2011 at 13:00

The soundtrack to this feature is “Not For You” by Pearl Jam, in which Eddie Vedder repeatedly – and appropriately, given the song’s title – shouts: “This is not for you!” If you don’t like Pearl Jam, I think we might be about to fall out.

So I was contemplating mobile phones and tablets (as you do), and realised there are a fair few recent beauties that aren’t coming to the UK for whatever reason. We’re not exactly hard done by in the grand scheme of things, but still… it’s the principal of the thing. And we deserve a good moan in the UK; the weather is mostly sh*t.
