Well that's that, then. After the mobile tech press went a little bit mental for a couple of days over a blurry marketing image that could possibly maybe be a sneak glimpse of a forthcoming Nokia tablet, the company itself has come out and set the record straight: it isn't.
In the end it's just a generic representation of a tablet to show the form factor rather than an actual real-life product. That doesn't mean Nokia isn't working on a tablet, of course – it just means this isn't it.
The snapshot in question came from a Nokia device launch in Pakistan, where a slide was put up showing the Windows Phone/Windows UI running on a smartphone, a tablet, and a PC monitor.
However, with the Nokia tablet thing currently a hot-button issue so close to Mobile World Congress (where some are suggesting Nokia will unveil its debut slate), it didn't take long for the rumour to spread.
Nokia's response to MyNokiaBlog, however, nipped the whole thing in the bud:
“That’s not a leak. That is a picture that simply shows WP UI alongside Win8 Tablet UI alongside Xbox UI. They are not Nokia specific products.”
That was my own reaction the moment I saw the pic – which is why we didn't report the original story in the first place.
But let's take it further: suppose it is actually a glimpse of a future Nokia tablet. So what? It's Nokia showing us a very blurry picture of a tablet-shaped device running some form of Windows. Isn't that kinda what you would expect from a Windows-based Nokia tablet?
