Wearable tech may be the “next big thing”, but we can't help but be just a little surprised by this latest rumour: Nokia, it appears, is working on a smartwatch.
The evidence is a couple of snaps of said smartwatch, or a prototype at the very least, posted on Weibo and shared with the wider world by Ctech.
Why are we surprised? Two reasons – first, most of Nokia's recent moves have been leaked to death way ahead of anything even remotely official being announced, and there's been little sign that the company is even considering a Nokia smartwatch.
And second, because what with the company's long-term direction completely up in the air right now, it seems an odd time to be spotting bold new gadgets and gizmos bearing the Nokia name.
Well we say bold; the device in question seems more chunky than bold, from what the pics do actually show. There isn't a huge amount of Nokia Lumia “design language” on show, truth be told, which does raise doubts as to whether this is a legit Nokia device being worked on.
Frustratingly, the leak extends only as far as the two images, so we can't even speculate as to what the device has to offer and where it'll fit into the Nokia mobile ecosystem.
Maybe we'll find out more at Nokia World in Abu Dhabi later this month – but it would be quite the surprise if we did.
