It was only a matter of time before some fairly concrete rumours hit the airwaves regarding Nokia's forthcoming Windows Phone 7 debutants, and when it comes to hazy punts into the distant future, it's no surprise to hear the name Eldar Murtazin popping up.
The self-styled mobile insider claims to have the inside line on Nokia's Microsoft-infused handsets – in fact he even claims to have secured an early hands-on with a prototype. Read on for all the details.
According to Murtazin, the first two WP-powered Nokias will be titled the Nokia W7 and W8, which doesn't sound too unreasonable an idea given Nokia's current naming conventions (their full titles would no doubt be W7-00 and W8-00).
Going into more detail, our insider friend claims the W7 is based on the just-launched X7 hardware, so would most likely be a gaming-focused handset, while the W8 takes its cues from the current N8.
Murtazin says that like other Windows Phone partners, Nokia is being given a fairly narrow window of flexibility in terms of the hardware, and both new handsets will be built around Qualcomm chipsets.
He says the W7 is being used as the in-house test device, and as such will most likely make it to market before the W8. But on the back of this pair Nokia has as many as a dozen Windows Phone handsets lined up to appear before the end of next year.
It's worth noting, however, that Murtazin's track record – particularly when it comes to Nokia – hasn't been bulletproof, so we're not sure what to make of these new claims. For the most part, they do seem plausible, but that could indicate an educated guess rather than a genuine inside scoop. We're unlikely to know which for a good while yet.
