How do you change the sound for the notifications for one particular app on Android?

That depends on the app, your device's Android version, your device.

So, let's start again. What phone, what OS and what app or apps?

Meanwhile: if the app you're looking to manipulate is not listed in Settings under Sounds/Alerts/Notifications etc or similar. look in THAT APP's own settings.
And please: there are over 20,000 android devices... and many variants of Android OS, plus hundreds of UI overlays from OEMs... There is rarely a one-fix-for-all when it comes to Android. :)

Ah, well... okay, of course there IS an app for that: it is called Megasound. It gets mixed reviews, is still in its Beta phase, and it requires your device runs Android 4.3 or higher. But Megasound lets you assign per-app notifications. It's in the Play Store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ws.stefma.soundcontroll&hl=en
