Offtopic: MelodyCenta.com - Legal?

http://www.melodycenta.com/
I hadn't heard of them until I found some incredibly hard-to-get 80s and 90s tracks in their catalogue last night. Are they legal?

I only googled a couple of minutes... They certainly claim it's a legal service.

Looks doomed to closure to me.
And as they say they will remove copyrighted materials if asked, I can't see as they have any right to say people can download them for free

We have a policy of terminating, without notice and without recourse, accounts of subscribers or account holders who are repeat infringers of copyright, and you agree that we may apply that policy to your account or subscription in our sole judgment based upon a suspicion on our part or a notification we receive regardless of proof of infringement.
The website itself may well be legal, its content is another matter.

All in all doesn't look you'd have tracks any more legal than if you torrented them.

Had never heard of them either tbh, mind you I'd forgotten the name Napster and was just about to ask for help remembering.

Didn't Napster go legal years ago?

Pondlife  Sep. 17, 2012 at 16:56

Yeah many years back and may even still be around, going to look. Oh even an android app for it and now owned by rhapsody.

Yeah. Well, I got the 3 tracks I wanted. And I spoofed matt's IP address :p
No, I didn't ;) I ended up ripping the tracks from youtube videos. Just to annoy Google.

Completing your Hasselhoff collection ;)

I was looking for a decent, in-broswer tool to do that in high-quality, any ideas? I wanted a Tupac song which I can only find on YT (it was the 16th anniverssary of his death a few days ago and I fancied a reminisce of the early '90s).

Side note: way to go sticking it to Google ;).

I don't fancy Chrome, but I wonder if Google allow an extension to do that?

also: what's the 2pac song?

CTPAHHIK  Sep. 17, 2012 at 20:21

You only get one song free per day and 30 per month. I'm not good on knowing which music is which, but a lot of music is cheap to license. It really depends on what is posted there. Is this is something that is very old or plays on radio every day? Possible to have a valid license.

I was looking for some 80s/90s indie stuff. Pretty small labels. Heck, my guess would be they disappeared by now.
The site only has 5 million songs (ONLY LOL)... maybe they are legit? I didn't browse to see what else they had.

It was a (presumably post-original recording) piano version of "My Block".

"Now ****'s constantly hot, on my block, it never fails to be gunshots
Can't explain a mother's pain, when her son drops"

How tragically ironic :(. If only he'd served his full sentence and not just 8 months, he'd still have been locked up on the night he was shot. He'd never have got in the MGM Grand lobby fight that got him killed later that evening (or a few days later in hospital, anyway).
