I am on orange (pay monthly, contract expired). Can I buy a new phone and contract with EE and still port my number now that orange and T-mobiole have merged to form EE?

I think they'd be happy for you to do that, presume the retentions teams can do EE contracts though so that could be a way to get a better deal.

EE contract prices are an absolute joke, they will let you do what you want to do, but you'd be insane to go through with it. What's the point in 4G with capped (and extremely expensive) data? Wait until there's competion in the 4G market, until then it's not like HSPA+42 (or even 21) is what you'd call slow.
