No idea about that contract deal - I have never had a phone contract, and I don't intend to ever sign one.
I had the HTC One S for 10 days upon launch. In every regard I found it superior to the One x.
Is the One S 'futureproof'? Who can say with HTC's recent software update flip-flopping?
But for 12 months? Why not? Camera is fun to use.
just get a good case with it, cause that tough coating they hyped isn't all that tough.
And battery life wasn't impressive. Though, tbh, in those 10 days I experimented a lot; tried loadsa apps, etc. My usages was probably stressful :p

Some launch models had a few issues related to the body coating. I suspect current models are more durable.

Lets hope.
I mean, seriously: It didn't bother me much. I don't mind if my phone looks a bit used after a bit of use. But I handled the S with kids gloves cause it was only a temp loan.
I never even plugged earphones in, and yet stuff was flaking off around earphone socket hahaha
Other than that I actually liked the One S. It felt really good for a 4.3incher, and the camera was a delight (though realistically it didn't take the best photos).

The need to "suspect" on something you'd be tied to for a year would worry me too much to make a purchase.

One of the MANY reason why I'd never sign a contract with what's arguably the dodgiest industry this side of the Russian mob...

In comparison to the US phone carriers ours look benevolent and cuddly though.

Good point, thank god I never have to think about dealing with AT&T or Verizon Wireless.

You don't fancy roughly £100 a month, still paying for handset and them still whining about data usage then lol

Maybe it's just me being odd, but no, I don't fancy that :p.
