Hi PAYG Phones - Are there a lot of unseen charges -downloading apps & games & using the internet.

Sorry for my ignorance, but If I was on PAYG HTC Wildfire, would I be just paying for phone calls texts , downloading games etc? Or would there be a lot of unseen charges? Hence would it be cheaper to take out a contract? Thanks (an oldie) lol

If you've got wireless internet at home (WiFi such as BT Homehub, Virgin Superhub or a router) then you can happily survive on just that, downloading and browsing on that for essentially free. If you want to use it while you're out and about, a package tailored to internet usage would be best. A lot of people swear by GiffGaff but of course it depends on reception in your area and your network preference.

If you think you're going to be using your phone regularly with a combination of mins, texts and internet, a contract would be a far better option as the commitment normally entitles you to far better retention deal when its time to buy a new phone and it can work out cheaper.

lizzy,
hard to answer without knowing your 'needs'.
Talk much? Text much? social notwork much?

I'm in Ireland, and I use phone more for mail/twitter and web than for talks...for me here prepay is much cheaper than any bill-pay option. But that is down to the fact that I rarely make voice calls, and the ones I make are international... And thought I'm online a lot with my phone, I don't consume loads of videos etc...

If your usage is a mix of texts, calls and web, a contract with data add-on might be better.

And as blizzard said: before you settle on a great 'deal', find out if you get good reception where you live, work and play...

Hi again Jan, I'm very much like you in as I DON'T talk text or social network much. (maybe it's my age!) In fact I have only about 12 phone contacts. I don't need to download videos or movies. I at the moment have a PAYG ordinary mobile phone. I would like a touch screen - with a good camera HTC wildfire maybe? Just to keep me in tune with the world! lol I have a laptop with Wi Fi which serves me well. Thanks for taking the time to advise me ---(_;) regards Lizzy.

You might want to look at the "HTC Wildfire S". It's a little bit faster, lighter, has a much better screen and has some nicer apps on it.

Three are selling it for £150 (and they're an ideal network for internet access if you've got coverage in your area, check here). Tesco are also selling it for a bit more but they're doing that Clubcard Exchange offer.

Thanks Blizzard.. What a useful web link that is. Orange is excellent coverage in my area.. Also the Wildfire S seems to be a good choice. A few more pennies-but hey ehat the heck! Will let you know my decision.. And prob be back for more help ... Thanks a lot to Jan & you for all your help. Regards Lizzy

Enjoy it. :)
It's pretty straightforward. Nice little pack of fun.

Thanks.. It's taking me a whole day just to get the sim card to give me a new phone number. In the end I contacted orange.. Now can you tell me it's straightfoward! ;);););) I will be back! lol

JanSt / MOD  Aug. 4, 2011 at 19:34

Holy cow? why didn't you get a sim with the phone? or was your own sim so old it jad to be changed? I'm speechless :p

lizzyrioone  Aug. 4, 2011 at 19:44

I wanted a new phone number! The PAYG package came with a new sim to be inserted into the phone. Trouble is it didn't work. Without a number I was knackered! The Orange phone help lady was very good & sorted it remotely!!!??? 8)I'm thinking of printing off the HTC W S manual guide.http://help.orange.co.uk/orangeuk/com.instranet.InstraServlet?command=com.instranet.CmdBlobGet&InstranetImage=4986606&SecMode=1&DocId=367274&Usage=2 But it is 186 pages long. It's a shame they don't include manuals now. People like me like to have info written down! lol

JanSt / MOD  Aug. 4, 2011 at 20:12

I'd just save the manual as pdf for reference on the pc.
printing it all is a bit much.
And remember, blizzard7 promised to answer all your questions.. hahaha.

lizzyrioone  Aug. 4, 2011 at 20:33

Yes I will do Jan..Was only having you on.....I've got a photographic memory anyhow! lol
X)Thanks Blizzard7 X)

Hi There.. Well you know I've been quiet for several days now.. I've been trying to get to grips with my geek box! But I have a ? How do I delete a multiple of emails if I haven't got any checkboxes to tick? I can highlight & delete one at a time but this will take ages. I've looked on the HTC Manual but to no avail. This is an Orange PAYG set up. Thanks

blizzard7  Aug. 11, 2011 at 20:27

When you are on the Mail app, press the "Menu" button (it's the button that looks like three lines, next to the "Home" button). Hit delete and there's your trusty checkboxes.

lizzyrioone  Aug. 11, 2011 at 20:43

Nooooo That's not working. If I keep a press on one email the delete etc menu comes up. If I press on the menu button the keyboard shows. Thanks for your prompt answer. These are Blue Yonder emails :(

blizzard7  Aug. 11, 2011 at 20:48

You're just one step too far that's all! Hit the "Back" button to go back to your Inbox (it's the button between the "Menu" and "Search" buttons). When at the Inbox it'll say "Inbox" on the top along with the time last refreshed. Now hit the "Menu" button and you'll be greeted by the options: Refresh, Sort, Compose, Folders, Delete, ... More. Delete is the one you want to hit on this screen.

lizzyrioone  Aug. 11, 2011 at 21:53

Hi sorry delayed by being logged out of this site & having to reset my password! Still not getting DELETE in the menu. i get CHECK MAIL- PAUSE- COMPOSE- ACCOUNT SETTINGS- SORT BY (a-z) -CHANGE FOLDER. Pressed all those still can't get DELETE or checkboxes. :(:{

blizzard7  Aug. 11, 2011 at 22:26

Hmm... Are you on the Gmail app or the Mail app? I'm assuming you're on the Mail app but I'm having to make a few leaps as my HTC phone is a little out of date compared to your shiny new toy.

So from what I gather, when you are at the Inbox screen there are no checkboxes to the left of the emails and if there are, when you start ticking them, a delete option doesn't pop up?

JanSt / MOD  Aug. 12, 2011 at 07:41

yeah, blizzard,
on the old HTC Wildfire multiple emails are deleted exactly as you described: http://www.htc.com/uk/howto.aspx?id=3374&type=1&p_id=316

JanSt / MOD  Aug. 12, 2011 at 07:45

lizzy,
follow my link above, hit the products-tab and choose Wildfire S. Then when on the S page, hit 'support'. The online manual/support might help you.
I'd post a direct link, but I'm precoffee and without broadband....

lizzyrioone  Aug. 12, 2011 at 08:24

Morning Jan. Thanks for getting on the case so early.. Hope you've had that cuppa by now! I've already been to that link. But just to say my son has a Wildfire S but is on a vodaphone contract. His emails has the checkboxes. So I'm thinking that it's the Orange network that's causing all the mayhem! Maybe I'll need to get back to them! Thanks both of you for all your help... I'm going to have a brew now! oO
