Will a PAYG Samsung Galaxy S3 on O2 work with a GiffGaff SIM?

To provide further detail.

I have a two year old iPhone 4s that since it went out of warranty randomly lowers the volume of output. Music/Call/Ringer. This week it has caused me to miss out on some social activities that I would *reallY* like to have attened.

As such, I have decided to replace the said fone and donate it to a family member who is my designated receiver of defunct tech.

The Samsung S3 looks like a nice phone to me spec wise. About equal in power to the iP 4s but with the ability to add in a memory card to hold more music; etc etc. CarphoneWarehouse have the S3 at approx £200 sim free or £160 on PAYG O2 plus a £10 topup.

I currently have a GiffGaff sim with a recurring goodybag and a number that my friends & Family all know. Can I make the O2 phone serve or would I need to pay to unlock it at that point?

Thanks,
Ian

o2 phones work with GIffGaff plus almost all Carphone Warehouse phones are unlocked anyway.

But what I would say is, maybe consider something other than the S3.
Like the Motorola Moto G 4G for ~£130 from Tesco

SpruceyB,

Thanks for that info. I was guessing that as GiffGaff piggyback on O2 it should work.

I have had a look at the specs on the Moto G 4G and it looks great.

On the carphone warehouse site it is listed absent a memory upgrade slot.

Tesco seem to say that it HAS a memory upgrade slot. There do seem to be problems with the firmware and memory cards but I can wait for a fix. It is all about future proofing.

My GiffGaff sim will work in the Tesco locked PAYG; I think big bad Tesco just got a customer!

Thanks,
Ian

Use a new email and code TDX-KYNK to get £10 off.

The SD Card fix update has been pushed out and everything is working fine now (for the majority of people).

I did read somebody saying they complained to Tesco that their 32GB card wasn't working and they sent them a free 16GB card, so maybe worth a shot?

If the GiffGaff SIM doesn't work, it's less than £2 to unlock

This has turned out to be untrue! The GiffGaff sim requires an unblock code...

Also untrue.
1st link goes to an expensive Motorola Mobile Phone Unlock Code Quick For Moto G LTE 4G at £499.
2nd link goes to an unlock link with a buy it now price of £19.95.

Something is up with the Tesco Moto G and Moto G 4G.
All the cheap unblocks are now gone and there only appear to be more expensive unblocks.

I paid for one via ebay/paypal on Thursday - just got the email saying that the code for my phone was unavailable and refunding my money.

This phone may go back to Tesco under DSR! Not sure if to wait for a later unblock or to accept that the choice was foolish, return and go back to the Samsung Galaxy S3 plan. I will try another unlock code supplier but doubt that I will go to the
£19.95 just yet!

(The phone it's is nice though. Slick, fast and feels like quality.)

Posting to help someone else avoid a mess like I am in!

Kind regards,
Ian

If I could figure out how to remove the "Most Useful Answer" from the Moto G 4G suggestion reply - I would.

More like "Caveat Emptor" - as always.

The Tesco Moto G phones are known to have problems with getting them unlocked. No one knows why this is the case, but Moto G phones (both 4G and 3G versions) on other networks don't have this problem. It is possible that the Tesco versions are double locked - locked to O2 and Tesco, making the unlock process more difficult. I suggest you buy one on a different network (O2 seems best in your case, as the top up will allow you to buy credit on your giffgaff sim) then get the phone unlocked using the online options you tried previously.

As for which handsets take SD cards; the 3g version doesn't have an SD slot, but the 4G version does.
