when did paying 400 quid for a phone become 'normal'

In the age of phone technology its fair to say paying 400 quid for the latest phone wasn't normal when people used 'dumbphones' but when featurephones became the norm, paying higher prices became normal... Then came the advent of smartphones coming in at high prices often above 400 heading towards 800 for the highest level iphone. What caused this shift towards the best phone... is it the technology was it the advent of 'cool' phones (looking at the iphone there) ...

opinions or am i barking up the wrong tree?

Wrong tree...hell, wrong forest ;).

400-500 isn't normal, just smartphones have more publicity as they actually, well, work nowadays. No one who wasn't a total tech lover was ever going to pay 400+ for a WP6.5 device, were they? Also, it's your age mate, you're a young adult, when you were a teenager people had phones but the technology was still young, there was little that justified such a high price, inflation will also have played it's part. No doubt when you were a kid, you never considered the very high end phones, I know my daughter would never dream of buying an iPhone or an SGS2 etc, making them suddenly seem normal to you because you're surrounded by people who aren't kids, who do pay attention to the expensive phones as even expensive phones aren't that expensive once you have a regular, decent income. I mean what's 30 quid a month when you're earning 20,000+ a year?

I do see your point though, I get what you mean about it seeming normal. Though I think it's just because of your personal view as opposed to the genuine norm among the general public.

PS: No I have no way of backing any of what I said up haha :p!

how old do you think i am ;)

but then again look at samsung over 30 million sold apple hundreds of millions and thats ignoring the lgs/motos/htcs of the world...

matt101101 / MOD  Dec. 27, 2011 at 00:34

I was assuming you're about 20 :), as you're at uni. I'm sorry if I offended you...if you're a mature student then I'm sorry for my unfounded assumption.

I forgot to mention your Apple point, I think Apple helped a lot by giving the smartphone a far less business/geek image.

Treab  Dec. 27, 2011 at 00:39

im a technical mature student ;) (24)

yeah apple has possibly changed the game from just being a tool to a media device... which has led to people paying high prices and thinking its normal... take hukd someone today has posted a deal for the iphone 4s 235 upfront and 35 a month thereafter... he bought 3 for the family!!! thats 810 this month alone... 10 years ago no-one would consider that normal or even a deal.. so whats caused this change?

matt101101 / MOD  Dec. 27, 2011 at 00:45

Oh right, I wasn't too far off with 20 then :), you're still young enough to have been growing up as mobile phones were becoming more widespread...I hope...otherwise what I said makes no sense :p. I've been thinking about this some more, I genuinely think you've raised an interesting point here. Apple definitely "helped", smartphones have an entirely different purpose/image/target demographic. As for the rise in costs, maybe it's due to them now using more cutting edge technology, maybe in days gone by companies could get away with using last years processor and no body knew or cared as the difference in speed wasn't huge and the audience for smartphones was so small no-one ever heard about it even if someone did point it out...I've only been interested in smartphones for a few years, Android really caught my fancy after I had an iPhone and I've been hooked on smartphones ever since :p.

Treab  Dec. 27, 2011 at 00:50

I genuinely think you've raised an interesting point here.

you make that seem unique :p

but as i was growing phones were starting to move away from just being phones... snake was coming into the devices... anyone remember the n-gage? and just think 5 years ago mobile games were still pretty poor. and now we have the technology to play gta3 on the move ... let alone considering the photo capacity/movies/music... i cant remember a phone prior to smartphones which had half the capability of even my hero..

matt101101 / MOD  Dec. 27, 2011 at 01:00

The Hero, I have a little story about that.

My friend had one when I had my iPhone, I loved it, hell, I coveted it. Sense was beautiful and Android seemed really cool. A few months later I saw the Desire in an advert, I looked it up, saw how amazing it was and bought one the next day. All thanks to the HTC Hero :).

I have big love for the Hero, it was the first true iPhone rival IMO (I'm sure you've heard me say that before).

Until about 12-15ish years ago I felt no need for a phone, I didn't even own a crappy one. Work gave me my first phone, I can't remember what it was but it called and texted...that was it :p. I remember the n-gage yeah, it was pretty awful wasn't it? Like an Xperia play...bit of a fail? I think it's amazing what phones can do nowadays, LG's LapDock idea with the Atrix was the future, just the Tegra 2 didn't have the muscle to power it properly. When we can all just plug our phones into bigger screens to use as a proper computer, my idea of the future will have arrived haha :D.

matt101101 / MOD  Dec. 27, 2011 at 01:01

My bad, Motorola not LG...

Treab  Dec. 27, 2011 at 01:03

LG's LapDock idea with the Atrix was the future,

you wanna try that again?

I remember the n-gage yeah, it was pretty awful wasn't it?

yep total failure... but it was horrible to use a friend had one and well it had a qwerty split in two with a screen in the middle...

ahh the hero. my main at the moment... until i get my next phone and it will become my reserve :D

matt101101 / MOD  Dec. 27, 2011 at 01:09

I did try that again, I'm on my phone though so I added a second comment as editing the first would be effort ;). Fail by me...:p.

I never used an N-gage, it looked ugly though I remember the adverts in CPW's window haha :D. Gaming phones seem doomed to fail, though I bet GTA3 on the Play (if it'll run), would be great with the playstation controls.

matt101101 / MOD  Dec. 27, 2011 at 01:11

Oh and as for the Hero, I'm glad to hear you're keeping it. Just think, cos it's an HTC the warranty still hasn't run out on it haha :D.

Treab  Dec. 27, 2011 at 01:13

i wanted to keep it in-case you edited it :p

yeah i reckon gta3 on the play would be amazing just because it would be a trip down memory lane ... still having gta3 on the move would be shexy :D

Treab  Dec. 27, 2011 at 01:14

not until feb ;) its definitely useful to know :D i only found out it had a 24 month warranty like 4 months back lol

matt101101 / MOD  Dec. 27, 2011 at 01:20

Just a momentary lack of thinking, I'm too lazy to edit it out, if I had have been on a phone with a trackball (cough, cough...Hero), I would have edited it haha ;).

I can tell you first hand that GTA3 on the move is fantastic thing :p. I have realised though, you should never have been playing GTA3 when it came out on PS2, as it was 10 years ago you were only 14...bad parenting :p. I'm glad I have a daughter, I don't have to deal with the whole what age can she play 18 rated games argument.

Treab  Dec. 27, 2011 at 01:34

tbh age-ratings are a guide which some teenagers are older mentally than others... lets just say the worst thing i have ever done is accidentally jump a red light ;)

and tbh girls like to game too :p but mostly the sims ;) plus shes probably done things at her age which when you were her age would never have occurred to you :p

so when do you go back to work bro? 2013? never typical lawyer :p

matt101101 / MOD  Dec. 27, 2011 at 01:55

In all honesty, the only things I wouldn't let her watch or play are horror films and games as I think they have the greatest psychological impact. GTA and CoD etc don't encourage horrific crimes, they just give already messed up people an easy thing to copy. Being 18 doesn't make people who are willing to commit such atrocities any less impressionable. Well that's my opinion anyway.

I go back on Thursday so I only actually got 3 days off as Xmas was at the weekend. Unfortunately even lawyers do have to earn a living somehow :p. When do you go back to uni mate :)?

Yeah, my daughter's a typical girl, the Sims 2 Pets is her favourite game (after Wii Sports Resort). She's not exactly into the gaming scene as I know it :p.

The first VHS recorders for mass consumption were about a month's income. Price of a good 2nd hand car. Now you get DVD players with a box of cornflakes.

The thing is: how can there be dumbphones for 10 bucks? Much much more weirder...

Treab  Dec. 27, 2011 at 01:58

im back on placement from next tuesday... 2 weeks left then i start my second year :O...

yeah gta is relatively minor for an 18... compared to say manhunt..

merry xmas and new year...

matt101101 / MOD  Dec. 27, 2011 at 02:03

CoD for example used to be a 15, it's only become an 18 since MW2...I think it was the back story more than the gameplay that caused that change though. Manhunt was fu*king disgusting, I bought it briefly just to see what all the fuss was about, I never even finished it.

Jan, that's a fair point, 10 years ago you couldn't pick up a phone for less than some network's minimum top up :/. It's the disposable world we now live in...

Treab  Dec. 27, 2011 at 02:07

yeah manhunt is just odd... i mean we all find it funny in gta to run down old ladies in cars... it reminds us of that classic film death race 2000 (seriously just watched the original and jeez what a film)

matt101101 / MOD  Dec. 27, 2011 at 02:11

The one with Jason Statham in? That's a quality film, not one for family viewing but good nonetheless :). Death Race 2 was a bit of a let down IMO, a decent film but not a patch on the first.

Treab  Dec. 27, 2011 at 02:17

no. the original from the 70's with sylvester stallone. if you havent seen it you really really should. possibly the funniest films i have seen in a long time.

matt101101 / MOD  Dec. 27, 2011 at 02:19

I'm so uncultured :'), I didn't even realise there was an original haha :D. Is it the same basic storyline?

matt101101 / MOD  Dec. 27, 2011 at 02:22

I just watched the trailer on YouTube, I'll be downloading that tomorrow haha :D.
