Have we mentioned the Pebble smartwatch before? Uhm, other than in this brief comment-based skirmish, I think not.
There are actually some 200,000 Pebble smartwatches in the wild, and as such it comes as little surprise to hear that users will soon get their very own dedicated app store. Lovely.
The news comes hot on the heels of the recent(ish; early November) announcement that Pebble smartwatches now have support for iOS 7 notifications.
In the accompanying press release, the Pebble team yells: “When it launches in early 2014, the Pebble appstore will be a first-of-its-kind wearable tech application directory—giving Pebble users a one-stop-shop for searching, browsing, and installing Pebble watch faces and apps directly from the iOS or Android Pebble smartphone app.”
The Pebble app store will host six categories, namely Daily, Remotes, Sports & Fitness, Notifications, Tools & Utilities, and Games.
The Pebble smartwatch launched in 2012 after the most successful crowdfunding campaign to date, securing a cool $10 million via Kickstarter.
Pebble smartwatch features include connectivity with iOS and Android devices via Bluetooth, while the watch is “infinitely customizable” thanks to downloadable watch faces. It’s also waterproof, with a scratch-resistant lens and battery life of 5-7 days.
