I’m not a massive fan of soccerball, to be honest, but once every two years (during the World Cup and European Championships) I become a football fiend, religiously watching every single game and shouting at the TV and that.
Being free of football fever for another few months yet, I was however drawn to Penalty Soccer 2012, for two reasons. Firstly, it’s the second most popular free App Store download behind the oddly enjoyable Highway Rider.
Also, the App Store blurb made it utterly irresistible. Behold: “You cannot know Robert Baggio, Del Piero, Cristiano Ronaldo, Diego Maradona, neither know Juventus, Real Madrid, Manchester United, and even Brazil team, but you shouldn’t deny playing the game Penalty soccer 2012.
“Penalty soccer 2012 is a simulation game of the real soccer. The game will bring you into a decision on the fate of the soccer, which you can feel the moment be a life-and-death matter.”
Absolutely fantastic. Try telling me that didn’t make you want to play Penalty Soccer 2012.
Penalty Soccer 2012 is, as the name suggests, based around the always-enjoyable scenario of penalty shootouts. As an added bonus, there’s also a Corners mode, though it’s much the same thing; the ball simply curves towards the penalty spot from the corner, setting up players for what’s called a “volley” (not to be confused with volleyball).
Whether you’re taking or attempting to save the penalty, you simply choose a position with the virtual analogue stick, tap to start the action, and, well, hope for the best.
See, there’s no skill involved in Penalty Soccer 2012 whatsoever. It’s completely random.
There are power-ups in Penalty Soccer 2012, essentially guaranteeing a successful shot or save, but – for me at least – that only served to ram home the randomness. Kinda silly.
You can save up in-game currency (golden balls) for additional strips and balls and power-ups and that. That’s about as exciting as it gets. Needless to say you can pay real money too. Meh.
And that’s Penalty Soccer 2012.
- It’s free
- Penalties and corners
- Looks good
- Completely random
- Very samey
Summary: Penalty Soccer 2012 does what it says on the virtual tin. It’s a fun distraction for a wee while, if nothing else.
