Why is PenTile so bad?

In layman's terms, what makes PenTile so bad? I've been reading about it but it keeps going on about sub-pixel matrices etc ;)

its not unless you look at a screen using a microscope...

Simply, pixels are made up of sub-pixels. PenTile displays have 2 sub-pixels per pixel and RGB displays (that's everything that isn't PenTile) have 3 sub-pixels per pixel, so you actually get 50% more sub-pixels on an equal resolution display when it uses an RGB layout.

A good example of this is the Motorola RAZR's 4.3" qHD SAMOLED (PenTile) display looks far worse than the SGS2's 4.3" 480x800 SAMOLED+ (RGB) display. That's because the S2 actually has more sub-pixels making up its display than the higher resolution RAZR does.

Agree... It's one of those things bored hyper-active techies can go on about for hours while the vast majority of owner would never ever notice. :p

I'll concede that it's possible to never notice a PenTile display, I was happy with my Desire's display until I saw the S2's. After that even when I was just using the Desire and they weren't side by side, I still couldn't "unsee" the PenTile-ness. Same goes for every other PenTile device I look at. The only one I nearly forgave was the original Note as it was the first HD display we'd seen in the UK.

Yeah, true... side by side comparisons can be, cough, eye-opening.

Matt likes to get the most for his money, that's all. Also, don't even try and deny that the S2's screen is absolutely lovely.

And here's our resident comedian ;). PenTile to RGB is like SD to HD; you're not going back.
