HTC HD2 is going for £150-175ish on ebay. Flash it with an Android build and you have a Desire with a bigger screen. Only sold mine because I got a Galaxy S2 wouldn`t have changed for anything less.

Orange SF. There is just nothing else there that gives you value for money.
You might want to consider a contact with 200 out of pocket.
I've got my Desire HD for 150 with 2 year contract for 15 a month. 300 minutes, 5K messages, 1GB data and 3K in network minutes. I know that I will have a phone even after 2 years and this offer is not available even with SIM only.
If you already have a contract you are out of luck with only 200.

Carphone warehouse had Desire Z for 200 recently. I would not pay that much for that phone.

What about the Huawei Ideos X5? It was going for around £169 at Carphonewarehouse recently. http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/huawei-ideos-x5-3-8-sim-free-android-2-2-169-95-carphone-warehouse/941076

Huawei review (many on the net): http://www.tracyandmatt.co.uk/blogs/index.php/huawei-u8800-ideos-x5-review

Pretty sure I saw the Galaxy S (the first one, obviously) for £200 PAYG on HUKD too. Oops..maybe not: http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/samsung-galaxy-s-payg-unlocked-mobiles-co-uk-cpw-for-219-10-top-up/947101 (£219 + £10 top-up).

U8800 (X5) has identical hardware as Desire Z. Looks very good for a price, but I never seen one in my life. I cannot comment on build quality and ergonomics.

Yes, a HD2 is a good buy. I think you can get a new one for 230? Even the winmo6.5 os it ships with is okay, and with Android it's even okay-er.

I agree with the sentiments above re HD2. Just got one myself and have now got it dual booting with Win Phone 7 (give it a go, not bad actually!) and Android on the SD card - can't go wrong with a 4.3" screen too!

HD2 or a used Desire.
Splendid pieces of kit. :)
Or at a push you may be able to get a used Samsung Galaxy S from someone desparate get get the S2.....

The Wildfire S is now £129.99 + £15 top-up! http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/htc-wildfire-s-white-payg-store-phones4u-129-99-15-top-up-three-unlocked/951006

Specs: http://www.htc.com/www/product/wildfires/specification.html

I'd still be tempted by the Huawei. The only negatives I've read is that the Ideos X5's camera isn't the greatest. But then, neither is my Desire HD's.

The fact you can flash Android on the HD2 sounds stupendous, too. You have to let us know which one you choose! (I'm nosey).

I think Wildfire is very overpriced. Ideos X5 seems like a very good deal.

oldmanhouse  Jun. 4, 2011 at 13:07

You cannot get a new HD2 for £230 - that poster was mistaken. There wasa deal on HUKD for £273.99 but that's sold out now ( http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/geek-phone-alert-htc-hd2-sim-free-273-99-froomoo-b4u-telecom/941870 )

best just get a second hand one. I got one for £145 and have Android 2.3 on the NAND - runs great!

Yeah, apologies :(
No idea how the 230 got into my head.
Sorry

Going to go for the HD2, since I was interested in the windows mobile OS but didnt want a windows phone permanentley - the dual boot saves this problem, the phone has a 1ghz snaprdragon processor which is alright for me atm - from the reviews I've read the HD 2 has some battery problems - nothing a spare battery couldnt solve though. Thanks alot everyone!

With winmo 6.5 my HTC HD2 beats every Android phone in terms of battery performance. But yeah, with Froyo it only does appr 8 hrs with moderate use (no wifi etc).
Great phone. Takes loads of abuse and fantastic tweaks on xda dev forums. Enjoy :)
