How come my phone is using data?

My phone is somehow using data even though I only use Wi-Fi at home. I never go online outside. Why would that happen?

Some phones do background checks, updates, refreshes etc.
If there's no wifi about then it'll use mobile (3g) data. SOme phones switch off wifi when they are 'asleep' and 3g is still available (Samsung i'm looking at you).
What phone is it?

It would help if you had posted this with your phone's model/make as it's not your network but the phone that determines 'why' it's doing 'what' ;)
so, what phone are we talking about?
