How did News of the World "hack" mobile phones? What did they do? What did they have access to?

The "hacking" part is sort of misleading - at least for that tip of the iceberg: that doesn't refer to "hacking" as we usually use the term. They gained access to people's voicemail. Loads of people. They did so, in many cases, easily because many people don't have a password protected voicemail, But they also used private and not-so-private investigator to gain access by other means. That is all I can say without getting Mobot closed down
