Is having your phone network unlocked dangerous?

Can network unlocking brick a phone, say if done by a shop?

Nope. It can be unlocked via your network or via a third party. They both use the same database to get the unlocking code. So it won't brick your phone.

Only thing is that iPhone's are very hard to unlock via third parties. They usually do a software unlock. What this means is that as soon as a software update is installed then your iphone becomes locked again. So for an iPhone go through the network. Any other phone it's up to you.
