Can some phones really not handle 64GB microSD cards?

I've noticed some spec sheets will say: microSD up to 32GB, but other times it's: microSD up to 64GB.

Does it really vary by phone? Is there a valid technical reason that some phones wouldn't like 64GB?

AFAIK some feature-/dumbphones actually cannot handle large sd-calibres for technical reasons.
Most modern smartphones however should be okay. Generally speaking: manufacturers cover their butts. If, at the time of development and design there were no 64GB cards and they couldn't test them, they WILL list the current max size as the 'compatible' size.

You may encounter speed bumps - were the newer cards are potentially faster, but your phone can't make use of that extra speed. Just like using a USB 3 device with a laptop that only supports USB 2....
