Ping Pong- Insanely Addictive! iPhone review

Ping Pong- Insanely Addictive! iPhone reviewJudging a free app is one of the hardest things a critic has to face. When a game whores itself out for no money whatsoever, usual notions of context and value have to be thrown out of the window in favour of a new standard: whether or not it's worth your time. The jury's still arguably out on Ping Pong... but be aware that this simple little distraction will steal a lot of your valuable downtime.

The premise, as they say, is simple. Players control a Ping Pong bat using the accelerometer, with the sole objective being to keep a ball in the air. After spending a short while getting used to the sensitivity, you'll soon be able to play keepy-up for minutes at a time.

To make the experience more engaging, pickups frequently appear on screen that need to be tapped to collect. Multiballs and other powerups occasionally make an appearance, meaning that no two games are ever quite the same.

Ping Pong- Insanely Addictive! iPhone reviewThis may sound staggeringly (and even insultingly) simplistic, and quite frankly it is. But as any App developer knows, simplicity is often the key to success. Attacking high scores soon becomes unbelievably addictive, to the point where players are in real danger of missing their tube station because they're too busy getting just ten more points. Game Center achievements add yet more incentive to keep on bouncing.

Advertising plays a key role in free apps, and as you'd expect, Ping Pong is liberally festooned with adverts and banners. Naturally it's possible to upgrade to a premium edition that cuts out the marketing completely- but to be honest, there's not really much point. The banners rarely get in the way of the gameplay (excluding a small marquee at the top of the play field that can be tapped accidentally), meaning that most players will rightfully opt to stick with the priceless free version.

  • Intuitive accelerometer control
  • Accessible gameplay
  • Ridiculously addictive

  • Adverts in free version
  • Ultimately shallow
  • Ridiculously addictive

I've just downloaded it. Damn you, Lester. Must. Beat. Score.

Like you say, the ads really aren't that bad.

I found this game "Insanely" boring! you cant hit the ball higher or softer you just move: UP, Down, Left & Right.

And the ball always favours towards the bottom of the screen for some unknown reason?

Or am I missing something? May re download and try again.
