Don't know if the Asus plays .mkv natively, but MxPlayer plays them just fine. https://market.android.com/details?id=com.mxtech.videoplayer.ad&hl=en

MKV is not the natively supported format by Asus Prime.
Get Brorsoft Video Converter.
It supports converting MKV to MP4 for Asus Prime with smooth playback in original quality.

Why convert when many 3rd party apps play mkv just fine? mkv file size is usually smaller. it's ideal for mobile devices.

Terrible advice. It's much easier to install a 3rd party video player (MX Player is recommended by me too, by the way) which can handle .MKV files than it is to convert every .MKV video you have to .MP4 format. Even if you only have one .MKV video, it's still probably a quicker and easier solution.
