The PlayStation Phone's Gingerbread coup

The PlayStation Phone's Gingerbread coupAndroid Community has had an interesting chat with a Sony Ericsson “representative”, who confirmed that the upcoming Xperia Play was once intended to be Google’s Gingerbread “hero phone”.

That honour eventually fell to the Samsung-developed Google Nexus S, which became the first Gingerbread phone when it was released in December 2010. But that’s not to say Google doesn’t still love the PlayStation Phone.

Sony Ericsson is far from the biggest player in the Android game, but while other smartphones like the HTC Incredible S are launched with Froyo, the Xperia Play will ship with Gingerbread. Indeed, Google and Sony Ericsson have worked closely together on the platform, making it beneficial for all.

The PlayStation Phone launches on 31 March, and will be available from all the big carriers, namely O2, 3, Vodafone and Everything Everywhere.

As well as the six pre-installed games, there’ll be 50 titles available from the PlayStation Suite and the usual stuff from the Android Marketplace.
