It'll be the Micro USB connector on the phone, they're known to be a bit questionable on the S2. If you're feeling adventurous it'd only cost you about a fiver and 10 mins of your time to swap the board the USB connector is attached to, out for a new one off eBay.

Or you could send it off to Samsung (which takes ages) and hope they don't claim something else is broken and try to charge you for that before they'll fix the USB connector under the phone's 24 month warranty...

Your charger's faulty? What if you charge via USB/PC? Can you try the charger on another phone? (or, um, maybe not...)

just tried usb/pc and got the same message, thinking it must be the phone?

Yeah, sounds like it? You could try a factory reset, but that ain't a good idea if your phone's down to the last battery bar... When connected to the PC, does KIES still recognise it? Can you do a firmware recovery via KIES?

Had missed this: 14 months old, eh?! The battery might be at the end! Try and test a new one...

Yeah, I wasn't the only person to experience it...
