Do the police try to track down lost/stolen mobile phones?

If a phone is reported stolen and someone is using it, do the police try to track it down, or would it be too expensive/time-consuming?

Only if you run up a huge bill on stolen/lost SIM card.
If there is proof that phone was stolen.

Otherwise, there is no crime and not a police job.

We had a phone stolen here in a bookshop a couple of years ago. Colleague reported it stolen - purely for insurance purposes. Surprisingly, a day later cops actually showed up, checked cctv footage across the road and nailed the ****!
