Porkchop & Mouse iOS review

Porkchop & Mouse iOS reviewBit of a change of pace with today’s app review. Earlier this week we had the “match three” title i3, and on Thursday I looked at the awesome "bullet heaven" shooter DoDonPachi Resurrection HD.

Now: something for the kids. Porkchop & Mouse is, in a nutshell, an interactive storybook for wee ones, and – speaking as a big kid stuck in an adult’s body – it’s a ton of fun.

The story in Porkchop & Mouse centres around a cat called Porkchop, and a mouse called, er, Mouse. Porkchop really doesn’t like mice, so you can imagine her reaction when Mouse steals one of her precious doughnuts.  The audacity!

There are three modes available in Porkchop & Mouse. Firstly, you can have the story read aloud by the excellent Amanda Khachaturian. Brilliantly, you can tap each individual word and have it read back – a great little learning tool.

Alternatively, you can read Porkchop & Mouse’s story yourself, much like you would a normal kids’ book.

Last and certainly not least, you can record yourself reading the story, which I obviously did using the most ridiculous voice I could muster. I genuinely shed a tear from laughing so much. Like I said, I'm a big kid.

As if all that wasn’t enough to hold your interest, Porkchop & Mouse’s pages (if you can call them that) are interactive. Among other things, you can play a little piano, cause a plant to grow, and leave little footprints in the desert.

Gripes? Well, some pages are a little sparse, almost to the point of being disappointing. Also, it’s quite short, but that’s par for the course with a lot of kids’ books anyway.

Oh, and Porkchop & Mouse’s navigation could use a little work. There’s no way to jump from the middle of the story to the main page; you have to swipe all the way to the left or right to escape.

Minor gripes, for sure. Otherwise: great.

And that’s Porkchop & Mouse. We want more!
