This is from manual available using link you provided:
Files from a USB device need to be compatible with the following file formats.
- Still images: JPEG format or RAW format (preview only)
- Music: MP3 format
- Video: AVCHD, MP4 (AVC) or MPEG1 format (not playable in some cases)
Video files are located in the following folder structure (hierarchal position):
/AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM/00000.MTS
/PRIVATE/AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM/00000.MTS
/MP_ROOT/100ANV01/MAHA0001.MP4

TV will not play AVI files. Try renaming them to mp4.

If your telly has USB-Input, I think it'll play supported formats.
I have a Samsung that plays avi etc from pendrives. I don't see a portable harddrive causing problems. But then again.... ;)

I tried plugging the HD into the USB port on my TV but nothing seems to happen although the hard drive does boot up and lights flash etc.

hmm... could be many things. Do you have the right channel? Also, might be worth checking the telly's manual. Some search a particular folder. you know, like Videos instead of video.... what model hd and tv?

Thanks ctpahhik,
I had a note to myself to check it. Of course I forgot.

Julias, IVC (internet video converter) is a good freeware converter for all video formats. just google it. or get it at snapfiles.com under "freeware".
