How do you press return/enter in SMS mode?

How do you do a carriage return (aka return/enter) when typing an SMS using Android?

It seems they thought the least used key on the keyboard (i.e. smileys/emotions) was more important than the return/enter key.

Read about this on a different forum:

Just hit the Shift key, and you will see the "Return" key on the bottom right of your keypad.

Huh... What phone is that? I checked on the Moto Pro+ and the Galaxy Camera - both have a "return/enter" key in sms...

Its on the latest version of Android.

I am using the Nexus 4.

I've tried using different keyboards but none show the enter/return key.

I think if you use the default Google keyboard you can press the shift key to switch from emotion to enter/return. However, I use the SWYPE keyboard (cos i'm a swypster not a texter).

Yeah I've been through that one already.

There's no MMS setting and can't find any MMS apk file either. Came across one or two via Google but they looked suspicious and didnt want to risk installing them.

Isn't there a keyboard like Swype but not Swype?

shuwaz  May. 20, 2013 at 11:46

Well yes but it's going to be a pity if I have to loose the Swype keyboard.

It's silly little things like this that make me wanna switch to iPhone or WM.

I have to say: I find most Android keyboards very very bad! It's features over functionality.
I can type better on the small N9 or iPhone 4 or Nokia 701 than on a 4.3-in+ Android phone. What's up with that? Even the hyped BB10 keyboard on the Z10 is not as perfect as BB-fans make it out to be.

Hi Folks,
Yureka! The shift key is working just fine. It is wonderful :) Thank you so much guys

dsdelhi1  Apr. 12, 2014 at 16:19

For Moto G users:
When you hold 'UP' arrow key [key above ?123], the smiley key becomes 'Enter' key. So to enter a new line in SMS, you need to use two fingers at least. Kind of cumbersome, but it works! :)

I use Swype Plus Dragon. Although the Shift key does not bring up the Return key, I found that it works to use Dragon to say "new paragraph". Not good in a silent please situation, but not too clunky otherwise.

I had this problem too. I was using Swype Dragon on an SMS app called Smitten. You can't correct this in the Swype settings. You have to go to the SMS app settings. In Smitten there was a button under "extras" called "show enter key". Tick that and problem was solved :) Hope that helps.

I'm also on Moto G and holding "shift" doesn't make "enter" appear.

However, I found that holding the smiley button makes "enter" appear.

When you want to return, just press the upper case key then the smiley key become the return key, which when pressed will return.

Holding Shift Key works for me also. However, It only appears for a second, then switches back to the emote key, so you have to be quick about it.

Device: Samsung Galaxy SII X (SGH-T989D)
Carrier: Koodo Mobile
OS: SlimKat 4.4.4 (with Nova Launcher)

Do not hold shift key, just press shift key once, The return key will stay until you start typing.

I'm trying to get the return key to show up as well.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 and am using Hangouts.
I simply cannot get the return key to show up under any circumstances. I've tried both the Swype keyboard and the Samsung keyboard and neither show it.

Holding or pressing the shift key doesn't do anything. The smiley face key is always there.

There's nothing under settings about a return key either.
I'm fed up with never being able to start a new line in my messages.
Any ideas?

That answer is the best & easiest, thanks so much
