Should I take a punt on Windows Phone?

I'm thinking of trying a Windows Phone for something different. Probably SIM free, so I could always sell the phone if it doesn't gel.

Any advice about Windows Phone beforehand? Things I might miss? Things it can't do that Android does?

I hate Microsoft. And when I tried the first WP devices I thought I was on Candid Camera...

WP8.1 is a whole different kettle of fish.
They have made excellent progress.
It used to be 'neat' and 'efficient'...'tidy' etc etc... Now it is a great OS.
Resource efficient, battery efficient. An excellent browser - only the Blackberry 10 browser is faster and better.
Example: you can access all proper desktop sites. Not mobile optimised stuff. Proper web pages. That includes the likes of Youtube and Twitter - including photo upload etc etc...

Tiles are now a bit more customisable. They are transparent, and you can set any image as a tile background. The effect is quite good.
There are no widgets, but there are live clock tiles and weather tiles - essentially like widgets.
The notification bar - aka ActionCentre - is efficient. And 3rd party devs have access to the api to build apps that allow you to add more functionality to the bar.

There is now a file manager (well, quite a few actually) available etc etc...

You cannot install alternative launchers or skins a la Android...
But with the new customisation, one gets used to that.

Email client is excellent.

Where WP hurts is in the Appstore... Not the number of apps, but the quality.
But Since WP 8.1 has been launched, many apps have been updated significantly.
So, maybe things are looking up. (example: Twitter hadn't updated their app for 8 months. Now since WP 8.1 is out, the Twitter app has seen two updates already. Dito many others).

But you definitely wanna check for the things you cannot 'live' without.

Lemme know what you use a lot on you current device.
Camera important or not?
Screensize etc etc...
