Is it possible to download Android apps on a PC and transfer them to your phone? Is it just a case of putting them on the SD card? Would that work?

Yes indeed. The .apk files which are the packaged android apps can be stored wherever you like on the sd card. Just use a 'file manager' something like Astro to navigate your way to the file and install from there. You must have Menu -> Settings -> Applications -> 'Unknown sources' ticked to allow you to install non-Market applications.

You can also login with your google id into market.android.com, select the app that you want to install and click install. You will be provided with an option to select your phone and then install the app to it. If you have an apk file then mrew42 had provided the way to install them.
