Quad-core Samsung Galaxy S III rocking Android and bada? Nah

Quad-core Samsung Galaxy S III rocking Android and bada? NahYou know that saying: if something seems too good - or far freakin' fetched - to be true, it probably is? We’ll that’s exactly the story with the latest round of Samsung Galaxy S III rumours.

A purported press image leaked alongside a full serving of outrageous specs, but it’s all been confirmed as pure fantasy.

The details were reported by Concept Phones, and had supposedly come via some dude called Ivan Ilchenko, who spotted them on Samsung’s official page on VKontakte – a Russian social network. Phew.

However, Samsung Russia later clarified: “The mock-ups, published in the article on Concept-Phones.com, were posted in the “Imagined Phones” section of “Samsung Phones Owners’ Club” group on VKontakte.ru.

"This section contains unofficial artworks and designs, created by group members, and are products of pure imagination, sometime even a joke.”

We’d been told to expect a stylus-rawkin’ 5in Samsung Galaxy S III, with a quad-core Samsung Exynos 4412 1.5GHz processor, 1280x720 resolution display, 12MP camera with not one but two flashes, a thickness of 9mm, and choice of 32 or 64GB storage.

Crazier still, this imagined Samsung Galaxy S III was said to run both Android and bada.

Ah well, back to the drawing board. We're expecting the Samsung Galaxy S III to land at Mobile World Congress in February.

Good idea, though. Samsung should consider the feasibility. Netbooks with less mighty specs running W7 and Android ;)

Please run Bada and Android on the S3, Samsung. I love Bada, it's the most under-rated OS ever, people would love it if they'd actually ever heard of it ;).

jmarcelino  Dec. 26, 2011 at 16:55

Are you serious Matt? It's more closed than iOS. Didn't they have a rule banning VOIP apps on Bada so you could't even have things like Skype on it?

Closed OS + Samsung's typical support and update schedule = nightmare

JanSt / MOD  Dec. 26, 2011 at 18:34

voip is a "go" in latest Bada.
There's also a decent homebrew community for apps not officially supported. ;)

Also: 'closed' it may be, but Bada is hardly on iOS levels in that regard. From mass storage mode to non-appstore apps, Bada is more open. It also is less power hungry.

matt101101 / MOD  Dec. 26, 2011 at 18:52

If I could run the plethora of Apps available on Android with the smoothness and power consumption levels of Bada, I'd be in a very happy mobile world :p.

5" is where this phone would of lost me... after seeing how big the htc sensation xl is (let alone the note) its heading to the realms of being too big. (saying that i think 4.7 is the max they should go to as its still usable as a phone...

matt101101 / MOD  Dec. 26, 2011 at 19:26

I have to agree with you there, Treab. Even with no bezel, the screen is just too big to reach across with the phone in one hand at 5".

Treab  Dec. 26, 2011 at 19:29

i mean if it was 4.7 with the style above i would try to find a way to get my hands on it ;) i will say that style looks shexy even for a fake :D

matt101101 / MOD  Dec. 26, 2011 at 19:46

I agree again. The picture above would make a lovely phone. I reckon that's pretty much what the S3 will look like (the curved screen thing seems to be a Nexus only feature), but with a slightly larger bezel as the one in the picture is unbelievably thin.

I think the S3 will be 4.6/4.7", Samsung know 5" is too big, hence the Nexus being the size it is.

now now. they did make the note ;) so the nexus maybe to googles specs or they didnt want it to compete with their own note and the nexus has the middle ground for them...

matt101101 / MOD  Dec. 26, 2011 at 19:59

The Note is a niche product, even Samsung marketed it as a Phablet, paraphrased, not a phone. The SGS line of phones is Samsung's annual flagship PHONE, I seriously doubt they'd bring about any doubt as to whether the SGS line was a phone or a tablet.

Treab  Dec. 26, 2011 at 20:02

ahh yes but the phablet has been a very very good seller... so it could easily lead to then considering a repeat?

matt101101 / MOD  Dec. 26, 2011 at 20:05

Nowhere near as much of a hit as the S2 was though...

Treab  Dec. 26, 2011 at 20:06

ahh but how has it done in its first 3 months? that is the question i need an answer to... just in case the cost comes down ;)

matt101101 / MOD  Dec. 26, 2011 at 20:14

I don't know, I haven't seen any sales figures, though to be honest I haven't seen sales figures for the S2 since the 5 month mark and that was back in September. Remember the Note's sales figures for the first three months will include Xmas and the Jan. sales, so they'll actually be worse than they look.

i wonder how the razr is selling... i was disappointed to see it uses a powervr sgx540

but it would still be a nice phone if the price is right... time for a brucie bonus ;)

matt101101 / MOD  Dec. 26, 2011 at 20:23

SGX540 is the same GPU the Nexus uses, though it's clocked lower in the RAZR, that's the difference between the OMAP 4430 in the RAZR and the OMAP 4460 in the Nexus, getting my ultra geek on there ;).

It's a pretty crappy GPU the SGX540, it's last year's technology whatever speed it's clocked at, the SGX543MP in the Apple A5 chip is 2011's SGX GPU.

Treab  Dec. 26, 2011 at 20:25

its not that bad tbf. just not as good as the mali or the 543 ;)

it can still play 99.9% of games on the market maybe with a slight fps drop but totally worthless :p

matt101101 / MOD  Dec. 26, 2011 at 20:32

It's nigh on two years old now, it made an appearance in the original Galaxy S...yes, back then it was an amazing GPU but nowadays it's not up to high end stuff. There's no way I'd buy a phone on a two year contract which would, by the end, have a four year old GPU in it (hint: your contract & the RAZR...).

Treab  Dec. 26, 2011 at 20:33

cheeky sod :p

i will probably end up with the sgs2 but the razr is gorgeous and if the razr is around at 15 a month, like the atrix another gorgeous underrated phone, went to then i would probably risk it...

matt101101 / MOD  Dec. 26, 2011 at 20:40

The Atrix is a terrible phone, which isn't getting ICS. It's along the same lines as the LG 2x, they rushed to get a dual core phone to market, but made a mess of doing it.

The S2 is older than the RAZR so it'll be cheaper anyway, pretty much all the RAZR has going for it is the way it looks (apart from that weird lump where the camera is).

Treab  Dec. 26, 2011 at 20:42

the atrix isnt that bad. they did a better job than lg has ever done rofl.

i do hope the sgs2 is nicely priced (either by retentions or dialaphone etc but due to current sales it is staying high :( lol)

matt101101 / MOD  Dec. 26, 2011 at 20:57

Currently you can get the S2 for £20.58pm for 24 months with 200 mins, unlimited texts and 750mb of data from dialaphone. That'll be less in two months time when you actually want to buy one. Remember, the S2 came out on £35pm+ contracts.

Oh and the Atrix is that bad, no ICS = dead in the water.

Treab  Dec. 26, 2011 at 21:03

thats after redemption ;) 26 a month with 5 months free :p i know i have been monitoring prices ;)

Treab  Dec. 26, 2011 at 21:07
