Is RAM important in a smartphone?

When shopping around for phones, how much attention should I pay to RAM?
Generally I'm staying away from 512MB and focusing on 1GB, but do phones make use of 2GB of RAM like the Nexus 4?

Well... simplifyingly speaking: more RAM, more apps can stay open simultaneously.
If you browse a lot and play heavy games, a GB RAM is recommended and 2GB can't harm.
But it depends a bit. Don't expect a 2GB RAMmer to be twice as 'good'... Depends on app design etc etc....

2gb will become more relevant as apps keep getting bigger.

Aye, though even with a 1GB S2 I never ran into any issues. Saying that, I'm not a big mobile gamer, so maybe that wouldn't have been the case if I was.
