Can Rayman Jungle Run keep up the rare trend? Spoiler alert: absolutely. It’s a stunning little game – in terms of both gameplay and looks.
Rayman Jungle Run is a real lesson in smartphone gaming, showing just how much fun you can have with an occasional tap of the screen.
While we’ve seen plenty of simple games where you’re tasked with jumping over obstacles and collecting coins while the protagonist automatically runs from left to right, Rayman Jungle Run is easily in a league of its own.
That’s thanks in part to Rayman Jungle Run’s visuals. Adjectives like “beautiful” and “gorgeous” have been thrown around, and they’re entirely deserved. It’s one the best looking smartphone titles I’ve seen to date.
Of course, good graphics alone do not a great game make, but I’m glad to report that Rayman Jungle Run’s gameplay is equally fantastic.
We have 40 Rayman Jungle Run levels, split into four groups of 10. There’s Jump, Fly (a second tap lets you hover), Wall Run, and Punch – which invites you to smack witches right in the gob. Brilliant.
If you manage to collect all coins in a given level, you’re awarded one of Death’s teeth. Collect five Death’s teeth in a particular world, and you’ll unlock the Land of the Livid Dead level. Warning: they’re unbelievably difficult, but kinda fun in a perverse way.
Collecting Death’s teeth gives Rayman Jungle Run some much needed replay value. See, there are only 40 levels – including the Land of the Livid Dead. A couple of hours, and it’s all over.
But while there’s not much bang for your £1.99 (same price on Google Play, incidentally), what little is on offer is smartphone gaming perfection.
And that’s Rayman Jungle Run. Short, and tooth-destroyingly sweet.
- Looks incredible
- Four worlds
- Game Center achievements
- It’s really short
- The music is occasionally annoying
Summary: Rayman Jungle Run is slick, simple and stunning, but sadly quite short. Heck, £1.99 will barely buy you a coffee these days. Go get it.
