Off the record? Dr Schmidt understands the needs of dictators...

Google's Doc Eric is in Pakistan - an Eden of liberty and web openness. Can anything bad come out of it?

What a sensationalist B/S headline (no offence, Jan):
It appears that Dr. Schmidt was caught off-guard in the discussions

Apparently, it's his fault for not "educating" the Govt. of Pakistan...because that's definitely part of his job. Google are a private company owned by shareholders around the world, it's not part of their "job" or purview to be "educating" world leaders. I seriously think "news" (it pains me to call it that) headlines in The Sun carry more weight than that site you linked to, talk about looking to make a fuss about nothing. If someone in the street asked me if I'd help him kill his wife, doesn't mean I'd say yes and then "help a brother out", does it?

Also, a request, which will likely be ignored, for Google to "clarify its position" is totally unreasonable, if a propaganda site asked the company I work for to "clarify its position" with one of our clients, we'd ignore them. I have no doubt that Google's likely silence, which they have a right (something that site seemed very keen on) to, will be immediately taken as a sign of guilt by these people.

I don't think Google or Schmidt have on this occasion, ever have or ever will "understand the needs of dictators", or have ever shown any evidence that the opposite is true.

hahaha
Are you sure?
Schmidt is a big fan of the "if you do no wrong, you shouldn't have anything to hide" argument.
Meaning: if you want privacy, you don't deserve any.
Granted, I don't know the site. And I posted this to provoke.
But if you're saying Google would rather forfeit the right to do business in a dictatorship, than betray the liberties of its users, you are wrong.

It helps to look up what 'fascism' actually means :p

I get the feeling that if we continue this conversation, you're going to take it a lot further and more seriously than some sh*t-stirring website making, at best, tenuous links, in reality absolute rubbish up, about ties between Google and dictators? ;)
