Does reducing brightness vastly save battery life?

I've got an HTC Desire S. Does keeping the brightness way down help save battery life? Should I maybe have it down at 40% or so?

Download Brightness Profiles and enjoy! I actually change my presents depending on the season. Summer: 45% normally, 75% - 100% if in strong sunlight.
Winter: 25% normally, 45% in sunlight.

I also chuck it down to 10% if I'm using it at night! Micro-managing it does make a difference.

Yes, it'll make a big difference.

I have the Desire HD and find that lowering screen brightness helps extend battery life by a good distance. If you go to (assuming this is standard) settings > about phone > battery > battery use you can see how much juice the screen is using...I find mine is around 50% roughly and by lowering the brightness by approx. 30% it then uses 20 - 30% of the battery power.

- Blizzard7: sweet, will check it out (on the market I assume?).

- JanSt: I cant seem to find that 'Profiles' app you mentioned? The one that is similar to the Nokia sound profile app.
