Review of the week

Review of the weekWhat’ll be your defining memory of the first full week of June 2012? The Jubilee celebrations? Computex in Taipei? A handful of semi-interesting iPhone 5 rumours? Or the week Treab shocked the world (of Mobot) by snapping up a Nokia Lumia 710?

Incidentally, we had a whopping 57 comments on the Nokia Lumia 710 price drop piece, and they were – mostly – other than a brief tangent about cats – on topic.

Finally, we had my favourite comment of the week – if not year – so far: “This site is terrible as its totally android biased and is mainly childish remarks by the mods. Hukd need to change the team on here.” Presumably that was aimed at Jan and Matt; I’m mature as a mother fugger.

"Every revolution begins with one man" :p

Treab  Jun. 9, 2012 at 14:11

Honestly. i still wouldn't recommend it.. android for me is the superior software ( yes i have only had it 2 hrs but the market place is far far far more expensive imo than android)

SpeedyG  Jun. 9, 2012 at 14:24

Wp7 games and apps in general are more expensive and has less choice, but you know as well as I Treab that marketplaces like Google's and IOS are full of useless apps and other rubbish.

Treab  Jun. 9, 2012 at 14:34

god yeah. there are some truely dire apps on googs... my flatmate downloaded a porn soundboard on my phone... that was a weird day..

matt101101 / MOD  Jun. 9, 2012 at 15:01

I take it it's arrived then, Treab? What're your views on it so far?

JanSt / MOD  Jun. 9, 2012 at 15:44

I'm shocked: Lewis and Matt made 'childish comments'? Where? When?
And how did I miss that cheeky non-conformist who wants my collaegues fired?

But yes, the "Andriod" bias is unbearable :p

its good actually defo not a 'premium' device but feels nice in the hand... very quick but the applications arent as extensive as on android...

matt101101 / MOD  Jun. 9, 2012 at 17:08

So basically it's exactly as you imagined it would be? How quick is it, when compared to your S2?

Treab  Jun. 9, 2012 at 17:16

Defo comparable (and i didn't think i would say that)

on mobile sites possible slightly faster... on regular sites (i.e. from hukd mobile - full) the sgs2 beat it...

but no flash player so no bbc iplayer. style of the os... those tiles work well but look stupid...

im actually surprised i like it more than i thought i would.

SpeedyG  Jun. 9, 2012 at 17:20

Not all the tiles update properly.

Treab  Jun. 9, 2012 at 17:25

is there anyway around the flash player speedy? i kinda want to try bbc iplayer?

JanSt / MOD  Jun. 9, 2012 at 17:29

that is AWESOME... hehehe

matt101101 / MOD  Jun. 9, 2012 at 17:41

Treab, there's no way (that I can find) of getting iPlayer, or any flash only stuff, on a WP device. Unfortunately you'll just have to live without your weekly fill of East Enders ;).

That is a surprise, what firmware is your S2 running? Just tell me "Gingerbread" or "ICS" and I'm going to beat you to death with it.

I'm surprised it beats the S2 in loading any web page, though it doesn't surprise me that the S2 beats the 710 when it comes to heavier stuff, such as loading full desktop versions of websites.

Treab  Jun. 9, 2012 at 17:48

ICS.

i was shocked too. but android is a little bit of a resource hog. but then again when i opened the stores for each at the same time the windows one opens faster... but that could be due to what it actually shows... a little more reserved than the android one.

only major issue i have found is that i put my music on it and i have nearly maxed it already... but as its my backup thats no biggy... windows really needs micro sd cards. (as does htc imo)

but i will say this scrolling is wierd... on my sgs2 i can fly when i scroll but on w7.5 it seems slower... and one flick i can go to the bottom of a page on android not on wp.

Not atm. No support even for Silverlight, a Microsoft creation. Until Apollo comes along and better updates come along, Microsoft aren't really trying hard enough with WP7 when Android and IOS are always going to improve their dominance and Symbian outselling them still with Blackberry looking to revive themselves.

They just cannot be slow to improve this OS in future imo, which has a lot of potential.

Treab  Jun. 9, 2012 at 17:56

Maps comparison..

Nokia drive vs navfree.

Result almost exactly the same... seriously to find the address via postcode and give me navigation directions almost exactly the same...

For £100 i would recommend the nokia again.... but not as a primary phone... the memory is just too low.

SpeedyG  Jun. 9, 2012 at 17:59

Best WP7 memory is only double that tho lol.

We need to see more 32gb+ models

Also, Nokia can't hog all the good apps they make, make it WP wide.
