What does rooting do on an Android phone? Seems like the OS is pretty customisable without it!

This seems like a decent summary of some of the main reasons to root an Android device:

Though not all of them apply to all rooted devices.
AdAway is another app I'd recommend after rooting that's not mentioned.

If you have a phone capable of running Sky tv apps and want to do so then rooting may not be a good idea as they won't run.

AdFree is one of the main reasons I root my Android phones, in fact, the only root app I've got on my N2 at the moment is AdFree.

Your N2? You bought a Note2? Or a Nexus, ahem, 2?

Note 2, why would I have bought a Nexus S :p? Ever since I played with one in a shop (and stupidly said no to a cheap one), I've been wanting one more and more. Now I have one, it arrived from Germany yesterday.
