Is there such a thing as a rugged high-end phone? I'm worried about dropping my £500 rectangle!

The problem with rugged variants of flagship smartphones: they are often ugly. Or compromised in other ways - i.e. certain specs are changed/lowered.
Imho, you'd be better of buying a good rugged case and a good screen protector - for many phones you can now buy tempered glass screen protectors. They don't create bubbles, are easier to apply and they don't have the sticky feel... In fact, most people wouldn't know there is a screen protector on the phone at all.
An advantage is that you can remove the case when you want to sell the phone in the future.
A rugged phone is a rugged phone, and there are fewer potential buyers.
Otterbox, Spigen etc etc make very good rugged (-ish) cases for most popular devices.
