Is it safe to recycle old phones?

I’m thinking of recycling my old phone to get some extra cash, but is it safe? Have there been any cases of identity theft as a result of recycling?

Do a factory reset. Than do another one - and DO NOT have your sim inside while resetting the phone. After the reset, check if your browser bookmarks etc are really gone (Nokias and some other modern handsets actually preserve certain data during a reset. Handy at times, it can be a security risk if you rush things, and think, ' oh, I did a factory reset'...boom, there's all your stuff nicely restored after a re-boot. If you have a memory card, don't send it with the phone. If the phone has built in storage, connect the phone in mass storage mode to a PC, and format the memory. Then use something like CCleaner or Eraser to 'wipe' and overwrite the memory.
Post the phone by registered mail, and before you do keep a record of the phone's IMEI (hit *#06# on the keyboard. the number that comes up is the IMEI). If the phone gets 'lost' in the mail, have it IMEI blocked.
