We’ve been hearing rumblings of a smaller, presumably cheaper, iPad for some months now, and a leaked document from Samsung Securities suggests it’s very much in the pipeline.
The document states – as we know already – that Apple will launch the iPad 3 in Q1 2012 (tomorrow, to be precise), but throws a curveball with the mention of a 7in iPad following later in the year.
Apparently the 7in iPad will land in Q3, and it’ll be “temporarily referred to as the iPad mini.” Interesting.
iPad mini rumours were previously dismissed, as the late Steve Jobs was outspoken about the smaller form factor. Steve reckoned 7in “isn't sufficient to create great tablet apps" and demands that users "sand down their fingers to around one quarter of their present size".
However, the 7in Amazon Kindle Fire has nipped in at the $199 mark, and sold like the hottest of hotcakes over the Christmas period.
The document goes on to add that Apple is in talks with Samsung Mobile Display to provide flexible panels. Jeez, I really hope that’s not the case.
As I mentioned before, the iPad 3 launch event takes place tomorrow. 'Citing.
