Samsung CEO: ‘folding displays’ in 2015

Samsung CEO: ‘folding displays’ in 2015Flexible/bendable/foldable displays look set to become a fairly big deal over the next few years, and again we’re hearing that Samsung is among the manufacturers leading the charge.

This time we’re promised devices with foldable displays, not next year but next, or “2015” if you prefer.

The promise was made at Samsung’s Analyst Day, where the South Koreans talked figures and plans for the future.

In the coming years, Samsung looks forward to “Enabling a Smarter Life” with a number of technological advances.

It goes without saying that we’ll see “Higher Resolution Technology”, but we’re also told to expect “Foldable” displays – that’s in addition to “Curved” and “Bended” screens.

Samsung is of course no stranger to phones with curved displays. To date we’ve had the Google Nexus S and Samsung Galaxy Nexus, and more recently the South Koreans introduced the vertically folded Samsung Galaxy Round.

With truly foldable displays, we can expect devices that essentially fold in half for portability. Indeed, we’ve seen as much in official promo material from Samsung (YouTube).

Of course, such devices will inevitably cost a small fortune when they finally touch down, but at least you’ve got a year-and-a-bit to save up.

Also at Samsung's Analyst Day, Vice Chairman and CEO, Oh-Hyun Kwon, conceded again that there's "room for improvement" on the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch. Yes, that's, er, one way to put it.

Unless some other tech sneakes up that im not aware of, a folding screen will be the next evolution of mobile phone IMO (as essentially the last few generations have only been minor evolutions).

One device that is pocketable and hopefully has a screen on the outside to work as a notmal phone, and yet can be unfolded to a tablet would be the best way of providing a device both for people (like me) asking for a small phone that I can actually pocket and use one handed, and people who want a large screen out and about
