Samsung confirms NFC-enabled Galaxy S 2 launching in the UK next month

Samsung confirms NFC-enabled Galaxy S 2 launching in the UK next monthWe thought the NFC ship had sailed for good on the otherwise excellent Samsung Galaxy S 2 that's just launched in the UK – even reporting as much a couple of weeks ago.

But it looks like we – and everyone else who ran the story – were wrong, as Samsung itself has confirmed to a Mobotnik that an NFC version of the Galaxy S II is set to launch in the UK next month.

The Galaxy S2 was our favourite phone to emerge at Mobile World Congress, and one of the features we were most looking forward to was its Near Field Communication (NFC) abilities – the contactless data transfer tech used by the likes of the Oyster Card for making micro-payments and the like.

So we were disappointed to hear reports at the end of last month emphatically ruling NFC out from ever appearing on the Galaxy S II.

Now, however, Mobotnik SimboUK tells us a different story, one confirmed by two different Samsung Customer Support Centre team members: an NFC-enabled version of the handset IS on the way, and will launch next month.

You can read SimboUK's full account here, but he reveals he got in touch with Samsung to enquire about the rumoured 32GB version of the handset, as well as for clarification on NFC and exactly which regions would be getting it.

Online Support Team member Aya Smith responded, saying she couldn't confirm the status of the 32GB model, before adding: “In regards to your query on the NFC, please note that we have just received the updates that the NFC would be launched in the UK by June, however, we don’t hold enough information on the regions it will be available with.”

Our intrepid Mobotnik wasn't to be deterred, however, and pressed his case further. A second Samsung team member, Julia Jones, got in touch earlier today.

“Regarding your query, kindly note we have received a confirmation that the Near Field Communication ‘NFC’ version of the Galaxy S II should be available in the UK by June 2011,” she confirmed. “Kindly know that there are no plans to launch the Galaxy S II in 32GB model in the UK.”

So there it is – thanks for the tip-off SimboUK, and top marks for your perseverance!

Can those who've just purchased the product (within the last week) expect Samsung to exchange our handsets for the updated version?

mattjones0294  May. 11, 2011 at 21:26

I expect a free upgrade (doubt it though), that's some cheek doing that to people, like myself, who've bought an SGS2 already. Not happy.

I've just spent £500 on this handset. This is not good news and will make me mega mad unless I can exchange.

Dear Paul,
Thank you for contacting Samsung and I have pleasure in providing the
following assistance.

Regarding your query, kindly note all of the Galaxy S2 handsets available at the moment does/will not support
the NFC feature. As far as your query about the 32 GB Galaxy S2, it is not definite yet if it is going to be
released in the UK market or not.

So there you have it, the s2 that is coming out in June is a separate batch of phones, logically, given what we all know happens at June. I'd think samsung will announce / release the NFC version / possibly 32gb as a premium version of the s2 to take some thunder from the iSheep

i might buy a samsung galaxy s II now. watch bbc click latest episode to see why you need NFC (14/05/11). For those who have just bought a samsung galaxy s 2 you have 14 days in law (i think) to cancel long time contracts (check this out).

Is there any more news on this?

guest7  Jun. 15, 2011 at 11:41

ok this is really not good news for those who bought SGS2 without NFC but for people who were waiting for NFC version its really good news now is time to buy my Samsung Galaxy S II & I hope people can exchange their phones for NFC version with maybe a little upgrade fee cheers.

guybrushthreepwood  Jun. 21, 2011 at 11:29

Ok, it is late June. The phone features in the Barclaycard advert on TV. But I have spoken to several suppliers who have no idea when they will be able to get it.
Where is it?
When and where can I buy this phone?

Ryan1981  Jun. 30, 2011 at 08:38

Yes, that is what I am wondering. I want the 32 GB version as well but guess that is too much too ask. NFC version is nowhere to be found.
