Why does my Samsung Galaxy Ace keep switching off?

I've had the Samsung Galaxy Ace for about a week now. SOmetimes I go to make a call and find that it has completely turned itself off. I hold in the power button for like 10 seconds and it comes back on. What should I DO?

[Mod edit:

"If your Galaxy Ace suffers from this problem do not bother downgrading the firmware to KB1, or setting the WiFi Sleep Policy to "Never" or trying some other fix. The problem affects only a small number of Samsung Galaxy Ace handsets, and if you have the Sleep of Death problem your phone is defective. Have the unit replaced since the problem does not affect all Samsung Galaxy Ace units and is not a Google Android problem."

Crofty1000, it seems that there is a firmware conflict and it is causeing the phone to go into meltdown. Not sure why or what is causing this. Like i said in my last post I did update my firmware to 2.3.4, this is 2 weeks now and my phone has remained stable. It has not shut off and all apps and wifi are working. Again i stress not try do this it does void warranty on the phone until the "official" update comes out. How ever my phone is unlocked and i do not have a contract with any uses, I did this at my own risk.

There is an application called Load Monitor, that kept my Ace working fine, I had three phones from Virgin and they say that they havent had a problem. So what about the previous two handsets that I sent to them. Guess they will always there is no problems to sell a phone. Upgrading to the unofficial Gingerbread didnt cure things for me.

I Got my first Galaxy Ace on the 17th June from e2save but it did not get connected to Talk Talk until 23rd June. On the 26th June it turned itself off (yes it was fully charged / no it was not on standby) I reported it to e2save and they agreed to collect my phone and exchange it for a new one. The new phone arrived a few days later and the same has now happened to this one. I contacted e2save again but as their replacement policy is 28 days from the date you ordered it, I am now over that time (never mind the fact that phone 2 is not that old) and I have to go to a CPW and have it sent off for repair (and be without it for 7-10 days or more). I also am in for the 24 month deal and have only just got my first bill. I am well cheesed off as well.

Hey mattcaney thanks for the information, I've downloaded that app and the phone has never shut down since. Fantastic! Thanks again.

tracyaw8  Aug. 27, 2011 at 20:01

My Acer Liquid MT used to do that. Acer released a fix after a couple of months and much online-b*tching. I can't believe Samsung still haven't taken care of this o_O

I'm on my second galaxy ace after sending my 4 week old phone back as it kept turning itself off!! New one is the same!! More time trying to speak to someone at Vodafone who actually has a clue what I am talking about!!!!!

angellou06  Sep. 1, 2011 at 13:22

Hi Everyone,

I am taking my 3rd phone back on saturday all doing the same turning off and only starting up when the battery is removed, i have had factory reset and replacement phone's nothing is resolving the issue, the latest phone has actually turned itself off whilst in call not good.
Apprently i am the only one that has reported this problem from the comments on this website i think not!!!

try100  Sep. 2, 2011 at 19:06

You have to turn wi-fi off when you don't use wi-fi.And problem maybe will not appear again if your wi-fi is turned off when not in use.

I too am having this problem and have been assured by the CPW that they have had no other problems with the ACE. I am now on my 4th phone, after exchanging 2 thinking they were at fault, i replaced the 3rd at a different branch incase it was a faulty batch in the original shop. I have now been told it is a fault on my sim card as 4 phones from different shops wont all be faulty. However after receiving a new sim card my phone is as bad as ever.....if not worse. I am at my wits end with this phone now, i love the phone but am fed up of people not being able to get through to me because the phone has turned off. I have checked the apps running, battery life etc and there is no reason for it to turn off. i have read on another forum that even though the phone is 'dead' you can ring it from another phone and it will ring to the caller but not on the phone ( i havent tried this yet). Any suggestions apart from flushing it down the loo?

samirainbow  Sep. 7, 2011 at 08:47

Mine does that too! Sounds like a fault with the phone to me. I sent my original phone away for repair for this problem, when it came back it did the same thing, then I had it replaced because it kept happening, and the second phone does the same thing! Personally, I don't think it's anything to do with what apps you've got, etc. I think it's just a design/manufacturing fault with this model of handset.

I bought Ace like 3weeks ago through phones4u (orange), and week ago changed it to new one cuz of same reason all are describing here. Also first one went pitch black why charging, and was switching it self on and off every 10 min ish. Guess what my second phone have same issue again, going nomm and only battery taking out helps. As I read through this forum, it does not look optimistic. Anyone knows if I can cancel my contract if they cant provide me with fully working phone? Cuz I guess every new one I will exchange into will be same. Or I will have joyfull next 24 months?

robw6457  Sep. 15, 2011 at 02:50

i have just got a galaxy ace on contract from 3, had it a week now, and no probs whatsoever, however, a friend of mine had hers from o2 on p a y g, and within a day it started shutting down randomly, i'm just wondering if it's somthing to do with the different networks ?

samerayesh  Sep. 15, 2011 at 14:52

I am in Jordan. I bought Samsung ACE 5830 in April, it was turned off randomly, and you need to repack the battery to turned on again. I took it back and persuaded the shop to replace it with new one and it does exactly the same - turns off randomly. I am really disappointed from Samsung. I am planning to go with HTC or I-phone

joannepratt75  Sep. 16, 2011 at 12:32

Im with virgin and mine doing exact same thing , had it about 4 month was fine for 1st few week then it kept turning off , i have to take battery out and re start it and mine loses the time not heard any1 else mention this , im at my witts end with this phone , i love the phone its just annoying , sometimes its ok for about a week but the last few days its off more than its on , ive downloaded load monitor and im gonna turn wifi off when not in use so will see if that helps , i will report back in a week or so and let you all know if this has helped , if not might do a restore but its a bind getting everything off my phone making notes of numbers and stuff x

hculshaw  Sep. 17, 2011 at 18:25

has anyone updated their aceto 2.3.3 gingerbread - has it solved the problem???

lala2011  Sep. 17, 2011 at 18:59

I also have a huuuuuge problem with my samsung galaxy ace. I got it on contract a month ago from carphone warehouse and the first one one I got kept playing up. The screen would keep freezing and apps would start to open themselves. When I went back to carphone warehouse they exchanged it and that one's screen kept going blank and in order for it to come back I would have to take the battery out. I went back to carphone warehouse and they exchanged it again and told me that if I want to avoid problems like that from happening again then I must switch the phone off and charge it for a full 8hrs. I did exactly that and I thought my phone was working fine up until today. The same effin problems occured again and I'm really **** about it because I havent even paid my first bill. Can someone please help or suggest something. I cant exchange the phone for a different one because there are no other phones with the tariff that I've got. Please help!! :(:(:(

karodania  Sep. 18, 2011 at 13:32

As i said earlier, I had xactly same problems with both my Samsung's, but I switched off wifi when not using is and so far, third week with no problems.

nana3  Sep. 18, 2011 at 16:07

Maybe try some of the suggestions. Turning wifi off when not needed and turn off synching. My 2nd handset has already 'sleep of death' so I'm going back to the O2 shop and get a different handset. Luckily its within 14 days.

podowd  Sep. 19, 2011 at 16:18

Mine does the same. So I contacted the Samsung help line. They said (in early September 2011) that I was the first person to have experienced that problem. They had never heard of the any phone switching itself off. Very useful, eh?
