Will the Samsung Galaxy S II be much cheaper?

Will the price of the Samsung Galaxy S II be much cheaper after Thursday do you think?

Firstly, you can forget getting £400 for the S2, that might be what Amazon etc. are selling it for, but you're a private seller. Stick it on eBay for £400 and nobody will touch it. Secondly, of course the price of the S3 will fall, probably not by a lot though, judging by the fact the price of the S2 has only fallen ~£100 in over a year.

Worth waiting? No, the S3 will be expensive, even in 12 months time. Over the next year. the S2 will depreciate faster than the S3 will, so even if you save on the S3 by waiting, you'll make an overall loss as the S2 will be worth proportionately even less.

Also ask yourself, do you really need an S3? Is an S2 not enough for you? Have you tried living with a 4.8" phone day to day? Is it comfortable to hold? You might want to try out an S3 before you blindly spend ~£500 on one.

Not really, actually... It took a while for the first Galaxy to come down in price when the SGS2 was released. Some markets only got the SGS2 recently.

Not to mention the fact that the S3 won't actually be released on Thursday, just announced.

Or maybe it will. Would be a cool surprise.
How much was the SGS before the SGS2 launched?

matt101101 / MOD  Apr. 30, 2012 at 22:34

Just under £400, AFAIK. About the same as the S2 is now.

The SGS was available for £240 from e2save 2 weeks before S3 launch.

Thought I remembered P4U doing them for 230 not long after but not found that one. :(

Just over three weeks after launch at mobiles.co.uk for £220.

Damn...I was wrong, big time. The SGS was nowhere near as highly rated as the SGS2, though. The HTC Desire was the king of Android in 2010, so it doesn't surprise me that places were selling the SGS off for cheap. What you have to remember though is that with no 2012 mid-range device, the SGS2 is now going toe to toe with the HTC One S and it'll need to keep its high(ish) price tag to seem like a competitor. Also, the SGS2 is already sub-£400 whereas the SGS3 will likely sell for just over £500 (the Galaxy Nexus was £520 on release).

All solid points, but you'd hold off buying one atm nonetheless wouldn't you?
Think it'll have to drop below the One S price to hang in that battle tbh.

matt101101 / MOD  Apr. 30, 2012 at 23:22

I agree, the One S looks nicer (IMO) and feels nicer in the hand (again, IMO). People won't care about the processor or the fact it ships with ICS, average consumers will be more bothered about how it looks/feels (as that's what you instantly see/feel when you pick a phone up for the first time).

I would definitely hold off on buying an S2, One X, One S (or pretty much any other £300+ phone) until we see the effect the SGS3 has on the market.

Biggest advantage the sgs2 has is the external memory.

Thursday hurry up!

Thursday hurry up!

And an arguably better GPU (especially as it's only dealing with 480x800, not qHD). Thursday evening needs to hurry up...I want Samsung to take my money :p.

I am waiting for the SGS2 to drop to around 20/18 (i.e. £20 a month on an 18 month contract). Will buy it, throw the sim in the bin, reduce the contract in the last six months and pay off early. Should work out to less than £300 for a shiny new SGS2 in white.

Of course in the meantime if I spot it new for less than of course I'll take that.

matt101101 / MOD  May. 7, 2012 at 11:58

Ewwww, the SGS2 looks horrid in white. Have you seen the material the battery cover is made of on the white one? It's all tacky and shiny...chavtastic ;).

I want to sell my brand new unsealed galaxy s2.the current market value of a brand new one is around £399.00 plus a ten pound pound top up with network providers.i want the s3 but I'm thinking couple months down the line even the price to s3 will fall down. Whats everyone else's opinion on this?is it worth the wait

You might want to read this if all you're interested in is the S-Voice feature...you may have just saved £500 :).

matt101101 / MOD  May. 20, 2012 at 22:02

The same (I'd guess), will turn out to be true for many of the S3's "new" features, they're mainly software based and can therefore be ported to other phones. In the case of S-Voice it's a simple .apk file which can be installed on any Android device, it doesn't even need to be a Samsung. Somebody had it running on an HTC One S.

matt101101 / MOD  May. 20, 2012 at 22:11

I may have spoken too soon...S-Voice appears to be experiencing some issues...

Shid  May. 20, 2012 at 22:17

It's supposed to be top,and the s alert and s beam.i suppose il wait and see what users are commenting and then take it from there

matt101101 / MOD  May. 20, 2012 at 22:21

S-Beam won't be ported to the S2 as the S2 doesn't have NFC (or most models don't anyway, there are some versions which in fact do have NFC), the eye unlock thing will probably be ported as that's software based, I think.

Shid  May. 27, 2012 at 19:45

Oh by the way the price of s3 already dropping.i checked on amazon it's £445.99.from private seller by brand new.only thing is will b deliverd on 11 June bt I can wait
