Yes, you can, but it's not just by a menu setting
http://www.technobolt.com/2011/05/19/how-to-disable-camera-shutter-sounds-on-samsung-galaxy-s-ii/

1. Create a file called “local.prop” in /data/ if it doesn’t exist. Example: “/data/local.prop”
2. Open the file “/data/local.prop”
3. add the line to the file:
Code:
ro.camera.sound.forced=0
4. Reboot and all sound in the camera app is completely silent.
5. To recover the sound, you can either delete the local.prop file or change the code to:
Code
ro.camera.sound.forced=1

I think they try to make it so you cant because of people being voyeurs, especially on japanese phones. Theres actually a manufacturing agreement somewhere

I had the same problem. Now after I installed the latest firmware through Samsung Kies the shutter sound follows the phone volume. Just need to mute the phone before starting the cam :)

I can see the Kier Air app on my samsung galaxy S2, and i connected to the computer via wifi but i cant find any update of fireware to resolve camera shutter sound issue.

Would you mind providing a step-by-step instruction on how and where to get the update? thanks so much.

Wrong kies mate. You need a program called Kies on your PC, it's available from Samsung's website. You then open Kies and connect your phone to your PC via USB. Somewhere on that program will be a check for updates button :).

Put phone in silent mode - job done

ellboyo, as an owner of an S2 from the day they were released I can tell you it isn't that easy. The feature was only introduced from a newer firmware version, if you've not connected to Kies/ODIN and updated your firmware, you still won't be able to mute the camera shutter sound.

Thanks, I followed your instruction downloaded and installed the KIES software on my computer and use the USB cable provided, but i have a problem connecting the phone to the KIES software, it just failed to recognise it and connect to it.

apparently many people have the same issue, samsung KIES concept is rather poor, its not very automated and issue proned.

so now i am hunting for youtube and forum for info to help me get it connected. nothing is simple or straightforward with this samsung. So annoyed seriously.

cartedorlondon123  Dec. 31, 2011 at 10:52

finally it works, i resintalled the KIES software on my computer and ignore the latest KIES version. and it finally works. The latest KIES version is the problem, obviously doesnt work.

Anyway, once connected, it said i have the latest firmware, there is no update available for download.

Now this is stupid, cos there must be one available, as my camera shutter is not letting me disable it. SAMSUNG - you are SO ANNOYING

cartedorlondon123  Dec. 31, 2011 at 10:53

is there a way to complain to them directly and get some real action to fix thing?

Sony has sony centre everywhere, but is there samsung shop somewhere that i can yell at them face to face?

cartedorlondon123  Dec. 31, 2011 at 10:59

I chose to backup my contact it stuck on 14%, for 2 hours, did nothing i went and have a look at the directory that it was supposed to backup my stuff, there was nothing, a blank folder, stupid KIES.

Totally useless, what a big scam

Kies is a piece of crap, what firmware version are you running? I can help you update it without using Kies if you want? You use a far more reliable (and smaller), program called ODIN, it was originally leaked from Samsung it's how they flash firmware if a phone goes in for repair etc. The latest totally stable SGS2 i9100 firmware is version XWKL1 which runs Gingerbread 2.3.6.

If you want help on flashing it, just let me know :).

Treab  Dec. 31, 2011 at 18:52

they should copy HTC they know how to update phones ;) SENSATION FTW ;)

Yes, please, to be honest, i have no idea what the latest version of firmware does to improve/enhance the phone.
ALL i really want is to disable the camera shutter sound and somehow making the battery last longer!

If this ODIN works better, please would you be kind enough to post some instruction? step-by-step guide. Do i just google ODIN and install the software and then just plug my phone into my PC and it works similar?

I dont know how to find out my firmware version.
The ABOUT PHONE section on my phone doesnt say, where can i find the version info?

cartedorlondon123  Jan. 1, 2012 at 12:43

i have android version 2.3.5, it is gingerbread

cartedorlondon123  Jan. 1, 2012 at 12:59

found it my firmware version is (TGY) I9100ZSKI3 (Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread)

1. Are there any latest firmware version that i need to update?
2. If no, how else can i disable camera shutter sound?
3. Are there anything that I can download to update the battery suckage problem?
