Samsung Galaxy S III reaches 30 million sales. Mibbe

Samsung Galaxy S III reaches 30 million sales. MibbeThe ludicrously popular Samsung Galaxy S III hit the 10 million mark in July, and September reportedly welcomed 20 million total sales. You all know what comes next, right?

Correct! The success of the Samsung Galaxy S III shows little sign of slowing down, and now we’re being told it’s hit a whopping 30 million - less than six months after going on sale.

Somewhat bizarrely, it’s Samsung Polska reportedly breaking the news on behalf of the South Koreans. How very international.

The news comes in the same week that Samsung confirmed to CNET UK that the 5.5in Galaxy Note 2 had already reached 3 million sales. Or maybe that should be 3 million shipped, as stated in their headline. They seem a tad confused.

Similarly, we’re not entirely sure if the 30 million figure for the Samsung Galaxy S III represents units sold or shipped.

In any case, the Samsung Galaxy S III, now available in about 300 different colours, is clearly proving massively popular with consumers, despite the Pentile display that had Matt holding his head in his hands. But he crazy.

It might be quick, but the screen still looks crap.

SpeedyG  Nov. 3, 2012 at 16:33

Some flagships are not for everyone. :p

I do wonder what sort of beast the S4 will be next year. Will it stay under 5 inches and leave the Note to the phablet market? How good will the screen be? Will it keep the micro sd card slot? How much of a bump in spec should we expect? Will it sell as well as the S2 and S3 have before it?

Hmm, questions, questions.

matt101101 / MOD  Nov. 3, 2012 at 16:44

I reckon the S4 will have a better camera, an A15 processor, a 1080p but still PenTile or 720p but RGB display, no more than a 5" display as not to upset the Note's market share, it will have a MicroSD card slot, it'll use a Micro SIM not a Nano SIM, it'll have 2GB of RAM and a boat load of pretty pointless software features that no one will ever use in the real world.

That's my prediction anyway.

Pondlife  Nov. 3, 2012 at 17:34

Not seeing 1080p if it's under 5", think that's the Note 3's screen res, Could go with one of those flexible screens we keep seeing. Their own version of the panorama thing that's the rage. Maybe a nicer low light camera, or just a 13 or 14 mp camera. Some useless filters. Samsung's version of pandora if apple launch one.

6=300? Rather like the red. At least they aren't playskool* colours anyway though brown is rather dull.

*although cpw only has black 820 on their site anyway.

Didn't some Asian market get 3GB RAM?

Pondlife  Nov. 3, 2012 at 20:54

Don't think one has been released, is a rumoured Samsung with 3gb though

matt101101 / MOD  Nov. 3, 2012 at 21:18

My bad, I'd forgotten about that rumour. 3GB it is then.

I'd love to know where they are actually selling these things.

I commute to the City every morning and I can still count on one hand how many of these things I have actually seen.

On the Underground and in bars and restaurants in London the iPhone 4/S/5 is about as ubiquitous as can be.

socialjeebus  Nov. 4, 2012 at 07:41

Korea and Japan both got 2gb ram versions of the SGS3.

JanSt / MOD  Nov. 4, 2012 at 10:25

Carphone Warehouse and VF store managers here in the wild west of Ireland tell me it's pretty much the only high-end Android they are selling - plus a few Notes...
But 30 million sounds very iPhonesque - and I see more folks with SGS2s and iPhones than SGS3s...a lot more.
Mind you: Samsung shipped 10 million of it's very first Galaxy tab, and all guesstimates were something like 1 million actually sold...

We'll never know, I guess. But no doubt: it is very popular.

oops...double post bug strikes again

Well the world is a big place, there's even some of it outside the M25 staggering thought I know. Given their quarterly financial statements and profits they are selling them even though you don't like it.

But the 4/4s/4xl have sold 50m/80m/5m* you would see more of them. Maybe iphone owners like to wave them around more. As an aside I don't spend much time obsessively looking at what phones people are using, do you award yourself points? Do you have to go up and find whether it's a 4 4s or 4xl?

*Completely made up estimates

Now, now...
I notice such things - now and again... some days I encounter A LOT of people...

Still, you have a point - maybe owners of the SGS3 and Note are a bit self-conscious about waving those slabs around? Or maybe it gets tiring after a while? Carpal tunnel and such....

Pondlife  Nov. 4, 2012 at 13:37

Apple seem to do worse in countries where english isn't the first language, lower effect of launch events and lower media attention?
Are there any German notable phone manufacturers btw. Was just thinking it was odd there used to be two Scandinavian ones.
If it does get tiring then the heavyweight Nokias will cause issues..

Stelph  Nov. 5, 2012 at 10:35

Here in the wilderness outside the M25 most people I know have a Galaxy S3 and one or two have the phablet Note, very few seem to have iPhones apart from me and a couple of girls I know TBH.

I think the S4 could go to 5" but the note would be differenciated by the pen features, I WISH the S4 would be the first phone to have a clamshell design with a folding touchscreen inside. Literally the first company that announces this will have me throwing money at them every day until it is released. Unless its Nokia as I think id run out of money waiting

morpheus  Nov. 5, 2012 at 11:21

Was down in London at the weekend and did notice the proliferation of iPhones, everyone had them, especially on the rube / train.

Outside of London though I see a lot less iPhones, thank god. I think it must be the "cool and trendy" club down in London... although surely the fact that everyone has them makes them uncool?!?!

My GF is currently looking for a new handset, and she was eyeing up the SIII. She's on Three (she won't go elsewhere). The SIII is available from £29 then £36/month for 24 months. The One X is available from £29 then £29/month for 24 months.

Because the SIII has the biggest, boldest display unit in store, and because the sales guy told her, she's decided that the SIII is 'the best' handset out there. And because she keeps her handsets for two years, she's decided she needs 'the best'. As such, she won't even consider the One X, despite it being £168 cheaper over the life of the contract.

And people wonder why everyone apart from Samsung is struggling...

Can't all be down to gullible gfs believing salesmen surely? That said I wouldn't go 1x anyway.
Note 2 seems clearly though once size consideration goes out window

Depending on usage £400 sim free s3 from asda and sim only contract or p&go could work out better cost. Not on One plan though

Same here - Samsung's flagships get best display spots, biggest posters, most accessories
(not counting the iPhone)... And, as 2 salespeople told me - they are easier to pitch because of less confusing naming etc. One guy said, size aside, it was too difficult to explain to a lay person why a One X isn't necessarily better than a One S (size aside)...

Interestingly, last week I saw a lady walk into a Vf store - she wanted 2 iPhones for X-mas.
I knew the sales dude was a big Android fan, so I expected him to pitch the SGS3. But LOL, was I wrong. He talked her into getting 2 Huawei G300 s instead. "They have practically the same specs as the iPhone 4S - but more and better apps".... That women exuded "money is not an issue", so why he didn't sell her 2 SGS3s instead?

Sheesh.

Impressive work if more than a little odd.

Can't all be down to gullible gfs believing salesmen surely?

Wouldn't say she was gullible - gullible would be buying a G300 when you wanted an iPhone :p

She ignored my advice about the One X because it went against the (not incorrect) opinion that she had formed as soon as she walked in to the shop. The SIII is on a massive, flashy display unit with a TV describing what makes it great. On playing with it, it's evidently a good phone (especially when coming from a battered and bruised Blackberry Torch). The salesman then backs up that opinion, telling her it's the best on the market. The One X was sat on an ordinary shelf with nothing on display to try and push the handset. It was cheaper.

If I didn't know my mobiles, I'd have left the shop trying to decide between the SIII and an iPhone (4, 4S or 5), because there's no way of knowing which other handsets are worth considering. I'm not sure I'd want more options anyway - deciding between an iPhone and an SIII, and if an iPhone, which iPhone, would be more than enough. The chances of me seeking out an alternative are slim, unless that alternative is shoved in my face.

Still on 3 and believe same plan..

Won't buy off the web. Struggled to get her to go in to CPW tbh, she just wants to buy from the Three store.

Pondlife  Nov. 5, 2012 at 15:41

Wonder if the N4 had been out already if that would have stood a chance.

If it was cashback or some such nonsense I'd have agreed with her, she got a thing for one of the salesmen in 3 store then? lol

satchef1  Nov. 5, 2012 at 18:35

Mebbe. He did look a bit like that pastey **** from Twilight.
