I was at a gathering recently, and when one of the guys whipped out his Samsung Galaxy Note (not a euphemism), the surrounding people laughed. Not necessarily a mocking laugh; more an expression of surprise at the size of his gargantuan phone (again: not a euphemism).
However, despite blurring the boundary between smartphone and tablet (and resultantly popularising the term “phablet”) with its 5.3in display, the Samsung Galaxy Note has proved incredibly popular, and the South Korean manufacturer is on the verge of announcing an even bigger successor.
Of course, absolutely nothing is official about the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 just yet, but the rumour mill has painted a fairly vivid picture of what we can expect.
Samsung Galaxy Note 2 launch date
The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 was originally tipped for launch when Sammo sent out save-the-dates promising a mysterious “major” product announcement on August 15.
However, consensus is that it’ll be the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 launching (or re-launching) on August 15, with the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 following at IFA in Berlin. August 29 is currently the bookies’ favourite for the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 launch date.
Samsung Galaxy Note 2 release date
Purely hearsay at the moment, but we’re hoping Samsung adopts the strategy it employed with its latest flagship. The Samsung Galaxy S III was launched on May 3, and went on sale at the end of the month.
A mid-September release for the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 would inevitably serve to irk Apple, with the iPhone 5 recently tipped for a September 12 launch.
Samsung Galaxy Note 2 display
The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 display is tipped to stretch by 0.2in to 5.5in. Not a huge deal; we’re only talking five millimeters diagonally.
Perhaps the bigger talking point – if it is indeed true – will be the Samsung Galaxy Note 2’s unbreakable plane display (UPB). As well as being - as the name suggests - unbreakable (bold claim), it’s also thought to be thinner, crucially making more room for internal components.
Other Samsung Galaxy Note 2 specs
The original Samsung Galaxy Note had a dual-core processor clocked at 1.4GHz, 1GB of RAM, and an 8MP rear camera.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is rumoured to have a quad-core Exynos processor, 1.5GB of RAM, and a 13MP rear camera. Not too shabby.
Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Android version
We’re in that murky grey area where it wouldn’t be a major shock if the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 launched with Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0). There isn’t a great deal of devices on Jelly Bean (Android 4.1), and even the Samsung Galaxy S III isn’t expecting Jelly Bean till late Q3/early Q4.
A rumour we relayed yesterday suggested that if the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 didn’t launch with Jelly Bean, it’d arrive soon after.
Samsung Galaxy Note 2 TouchWiz
Again, purely speculation, but we imagine the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 will boast a lot of the features introduced on the Samsung Galaxy S III. You know the stuff: Smart Stay, Direct Call, S Voice, PopUp Play…

And that’s what we’re expecting from the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. Excited? For me, I reckon it’ll be between this bad boy and the iPhone 5. Good times.
