Samsung Galaxy S II: 20 million now sold

Samsung Galaxy S II: 20 million now soldIt was only back in September we were telling you how Samsung had shifted 10 million of its Galaxy S II handsets, giving it a decent claim on being the South Koreans' most successful ever smartphone.

Well guess what, someone in Seoul will be up for a bonus this year 'cos that number has now doubled to 20 million. That's in just 10 months, and considerably less than that if you're talking about the US, the biggest smartphone market of them all.

Samsung reckons the Galaxy S II has taken 10 months to reach a milestone that its predecessor - the Galaxy S - only achieved after 17 months (its overall total currently sits somewhere around the 22m mark).

The Galaxy S II has consistently been named the best smartphone on the market for most of those 10 months, much to the annoyance of Apple fans (most of whom completely disagree, of course). Either way, there's no doubt that its amazing screen and super-fast processor make you feel you're in the presence of something special.

Question is, of course, what's next? We're fully expecting the answer to be the obvious one: the Samsung Galaxy S III. Hopefully, we'll find out on March 15th!

Good for them.I have to admit: I absolutely hated the first SAMSUNG Galaxy S, but the SGS2 is a good phone.

If Samsung would define their products with brand specific UI and phone design they would sell even more. Right now, does not matter how I look at it, Samsung handsets remind me of iPhone.
With iPhone physical look and vanilla Google Nexus UI Samsung won't get far with defining a brand. Without something to identify itself with Galaxy S2 will be forgotten as soon as it gets obsolete.

HTC <> Sense. Samsung, well, GOOGLE < samsung > APPLE. Way to go Samsung (_;)

JanSt / MOD  Feb. 24, 2012 at 09:17

Uh?
I don't see how that applies to the SGS2 to be honest?
TouchWiz is so garish and ugly, but, imho, not nearly as intrusive as Sense. And the hardware is nuddin like the iPhone.
But I think you're right about the forgetability issue. The sgs2 has zero classic-factor. Not iconic in any sense. (though I have no idea what YOU meant :p )

That's why you not going to make millions, Jan. (_;)

In our modern world you need something that will separate you from the others. Something that will make you stand out and easily identifiable. Samsung hit a jackpot with S2 and they need to capitalize on that. Make Galaxy range identifiable with something that is unique to Galaxy range - build a Galaxy brand. They are not doing it.

Usually you need single person in the company who has right vision and can capitalize on success of particular product. Imaging what that person salary is. If S3 is a failure you still have Galaxy brand in place and customers will buy it - same as sheep buys iPhone 4S. This is not Apple specific - this is general trend in our society. Apple is very successful at exploiting this trend.

Example:
1. Customer walks in and know exactly what they want - usual case - I want an iPhone. There you go. Next.
2. Customer walks in and wants an Android. Which phone, there is 50 of them? Well, ahh, it was rectangular and big and looked very nice and had something called Sense. Sensation XE. Next.
3. Case 2, but customer wants a Samsung. What would the say? Only thing that comes to my mind is phone with rectangular button in the middle. Is there something that makes S2 stand out to a non-geek?

Ah, OK. Gotcha now.
So watcha saying is: by going from 15 million SGS1 to 20 million SGS2 in the same time-span is Samsung failing? :p
No, just teasing. I agree.
