Samsung Galaxy S3 and Note 2 KitKat updates before end of March

Samsung Galaxy S3 and Note 2 KitKat updates before end of March“I want my elephant! I want my elephant!” Sorry, I was just thinking about an old episode of The Simpsons wherein Bart really wants – yes – his elephant.

Here we’re replacing “Bart” with “Samsung Galaxy S3/Note 2 owners”, and “elephant” with “KitKat Android 4.4 update”, and relaying the news that the latter is coming soon. Like, before the end of Q1.

That’s the word according to Android Geeks, which quotes an unnamed “Samsung software engineer”.

The engineer says that KitKat Android 4.4 for the Samsung Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 will arrive “in late Q1 2014, soon after the Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 rollout.”

He adds that the UI changes will be minor (unlike the seemingly Windows Phone-esque Samsung Galaxy S5), and that there will be no new software features.

As such, headline features of the Samsung Galaxy S3/Galaxy Note 2 KitKat Android 4.4 update will include a transparent status bar (THE FUTURE IS NOW), the ability to print, and that full-screen immersive mode.

To be fair, from Google's point of view, the primary focus of KitKat Android 4.4 is compatibility with devices rocking a modest 512MB of RAM. Low-end sales have of course helped Android establish its position as the world's most popular smartphone operating system.

KitKat Android 4.4 recently started rolling out to the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 in Poland, while the Samsung Galaxy S4 version is supposedly still in testing.

The Note 2's official UK 4.3 firmware already has a transparent status bar. Mine is going in for repair (weird freezing issue) so it's currently running the latest, official UK firmware.

It's going to a different service centre and the water damage indicator under the battery isn't activated, so I'm hopeful.

I've reset the flash counter and removed any trace of it ever having had a custom ROM installed on it. I'm pretty sure I've done a good job of it seeing as Kies was happy to update the phone (I know from my S2 days that Kies refuses to update phones it thinks have been modified).

If Samsung do try and get out of fixing it I reckon their excuse will be that they couldn't get it to freeze in their testing, which is a realistic possibility if they only test it for a couple of minutes. From what I've read on the internet, I reckon the CPU is on the way out. If Samsung refuse to fix it, I'll sell it to Mazuma as working and buy a Moto G with the money I get. I can then wait for the Note 4 without really losing too much money.

Did Samsung ever release 4.3 for the S3 or even 4.2 for that matter? I've still not recieved any notification for my O2 S3, it would be nice to finally get an update, i'm still on 4.1.2 and according to Kies I'm on the latest firmware.

Pondlife  Jan. 23, 2014 at 16:15

They skipped 4.2 and went for 4.3 badly maybe...

o2 say by the end of the month

Galaxy S3 – We have received this update from Samsung and after our rigorous testing, has been approved and passed to Samsung for release. We hope for this to begin pushing out to O2 handsets over the coming week or two (hopefully before the end of the month) so keep your eyes peeled on your update screen. We'll let you know if there are any unforeseeable issues or delays that crop up.

11:25am 21st Jan - Updated Galaxy S3 section

There is definitely 4.3 for the SIM free Note 2. As for 4.2, they skipped it, they jumped from 4.1.2 to 4.3.

Oh I skipped the N2 bit

Note II – The 4.3 update for the Note II is now live for OTA updates. This will be roll out in batches over the next few weeks so this update may not be available to you immediately. If you have an O2 branded Note II and don't see this update, I'd recommend connecting manually to KIES and checking for updates this way.

£135 apparently at mazuma... whereas my note 3 is £240 i feel that is a total rip off....

You'd still get the Note 4 Matt?
Think I'd be done with samsung for a while

Treab  Jan. 23, 2014 at 23:47

who else is there tbh...

As Treab says, who else is there? There are other phones which are good for the price (Moto G) or good in certain areas (high end Lumias with their amazing cameras), but nothing which can compete with Samsung's high end devices across the board.

I guess there's Apple, but until they release a phone with at least a 5" display, I'm just not interested in what they're selling. Also, I don't think iOS has changed enough since iOS3 on the iPhone 3G, it's still basically the same experience, albeit with a more polished UI.

To be fair, the CPU might be on its last legs because I had the phone OC'd to 1.92Ghz for a few months...not that Samsung will be able to tell that, shhhh ;).

I can get £135 for the Note 2 from Mazuma and I know someone who works for Tesco who could get me a Moto G with their staff discount. I'd lose no money, just have a slightly worse (and smaller) phone. I doubt the Moto G would depreciate much either, so come Note 4 time I might end up selling it for more than a 2 year old Note 2 would be worth haha.

I can't sell the Note 2 privately, because I'd either get one very annoyed buyer or end up with very little money for it if I was honest about its issue.

Anyway, that's all just theory at the moment, I haven't even received the box to ship it in from Samsung yet! I'll just have to wait and see what they say about it.

To be fair, anyone selling a working N3 is likely desperate for quick cash, Mazuma know that as well as we do haha ;).
