Samsung Galaxy S3

‘The Next Galaxy’ returns, drives Mobot writer crazy

Long-term readers might vaguely recall a rant I went on around three years ago when Samsung started referring to the Galaxy S3, prior to launch, as “The Next Galaxy”.

Sadly, as we patiently await the Samsung Galaxy S6 launch on March 1, the most infuriating of all hashtags is back. Gawd I hate you, #TheNextGalaxy.

Samsung Galaxy S3 gets KitKat Android 4.4.4 update… unofficially

The Galaxy S3 was less than 18 months old when Google unveiled Android KitKat, and since the update was specifically tailored to work on devices with as little as 512MB of RAM, Samsung's 1GB 2012 flagship was a safe bet, right? Er, not quite.

But wait! The developer community has proven – as if there was any doubt – that the Galaxy S3 is perfectly capable of running Android KitKat after all.

iPhone 5s: best-selling smartphone of Q1 2014

iPhone 5s: best-selling smartphone of Q1 2014

Lewis Curdie  Jul. 9, 2014 at 16:00

Eh, slightly confused that we’re looking at Q1 2014 here, but presumably ABI Research took a few months to make sure its figures were put together with nothing short of pinpoint accuracy.

And the headline figure says the iPhone 5s was, unsurprisingly, the best-selling smartphone of Q1 2014, with a few older smartphones nipping at its heels.

Us: ‘Did 10 million Galaxy S5s ship in 25 days?’ Samsung: ‘No comment’

Here’s one that the rest of the industry seems to have made its collective peace with, but – like some sort of unstoppable moron – I’m not willing to let it go: Did the Samsung Galaxy S5 shift 10 million units in 25 days?

The claim was made unofficially over the weekend, but JK Shin remains tight-lipped. We reached out to Samsung for clarification and got a terse “No comment”.

Samsung Galaxy S3 KitKat Android 4.4 update: officially not happening

Samsung Galaxy S3 KitKat Android 4.4 update: officially not happening

Lewis Curdie  May. 9, 2014 at 14:00

There’s been a lot of speculation and confusion over the Samsung Galaxy S3 KitKat Android 4.4 update over the past few months, but here we can lay the story to rest for good. By sticking a knife in the back of your Samsung Galaxy S3 or indeed Galaxy S3 mini.

According to Samsung Mobile UK, neither the Samsung Galaxy S3 nor Galaxy S3 mini will be updated to KitKat Android 4.4 on account of dastardly “hardware limitations”.

Samsung Galaxy S5 selling significantly faster than Galaxy S4

Samsung Galaxy S5 selling significantly faster than Galaxy S4

Lewis Curdie  Apr. 14, 2014 at 11:30

April 11, last Friday, marked the release of the Samsung Galaxy S5 in a whopping 125 countries, and of course what we all want to know is: how well is the thing selling?

According to an early report from out of South Korea, the Samsung Galaxy S5 is – in some territories – more than doubling initial sales of the Galaxy S4.

Samsung Galaxy S5 processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 801, octa-core variant too

Lewis Curdie  Feb. 25, 2014 at 14:00

One of the notable things at Unpacked 5 last night was the lack of technical detail, leading many – ourselves included – to ask: what the furg’s the deal with the Samsung Galaxy S5 processor?

With the dust now settled, we’re told it’ll be the spanking new Qualcomm Snapdragon 801, while an octa-core version was kinda sort of confirmed by Samsung.

Samsung Galaxy S5 launch date: February 24? The yeas and nays

The Samsung Galaxy S5 launch date has long been discussed, and the South Koreans seemingly put the whole thing to rest last week with an invite to an event on February 24, the first day of this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC).

However, the Unpacked5 invite doesn’t specifically mention the Samsung Galaxy S5 launch, and as such I figured I’d weigh up the yeas and nays. Should we really expect the flagship to drop on February 24, or is something a little… off?

“I want my elephant! I want my elephant!” Sorry, I was just thinking about an old episode of The Simpsons wherein Bart really wants – yes – his elephant.

Here we’re replacing “Bart” with “Samsung Galaxy S3/Note 2 owners”, and “elephant” with “KitKat Android 4.4 update”, and relaying the news that the latter is coming soon. Like, before the end of Q1.

Four phones/tablets that never happened

Four phones/tablets that never happened

Lewis Curdie  Jan. 23, 2014 at 13:00

I’m kinda loosely continuing the Six outrageous claims that came to nothing (part 1, part 2) theme here, the difference being that the devices appearing in the aforementioned feature were actually released.

Here I’m taking a look at four phones/tablets that popped up on the rumour radar over the years, only to mysteriously vanish - a bit like Pondlife in the second half of 2013.
